Not sure really we got there and just missed the three oclock tour .they only had a one or two and then three which I don't find very helpful if you're on vacation you either would like to go a little earlier or a little later ..not in the middle of the day and then there's no free parking... the Lots just for employees so we haven't even gotten to go yet maybe if we get a chance to go at these inconvenient times I'll change my rating if I like it ..right now I'm kind of disappointed.
I am updating my review as I received a response that they are considering my comments as far as the parking situation and also the timing of the tour I do appreciate that and we actually did get back down there to take the tour and a tall older gentleman told us a lot of history and was very interesting one of my kiddos was a bit bored while the other one was interested that's the way it is with kids there's a replica of a schoolhouse and you can see the top floor of the Inn / Motel and the house that was moved from its original location. I also recommend if you do this to tour to head on down to the Stranahan House by taking the free River Taxi they also only have times of one two and three for tours which I didn't know and headed down there and they had just did their last tour ... I would just add if someone's 10 or 15 minutes late to give them the opportunity to join the tour if they want versus head back down there another day it was raining the day we came unfortunately and we had nothing else to do it would have been nice if someone had mentioned we were right by the Riverwalk and that we can take the river taxi I had no idea I was right there and I had told them I don't know what we're going to do then we ended up just going back to the hotel kind of wasted a day. It was another employee that told me the lot was just for employees but when I came back I did Park in it because that's not what the sign said. Thank you for...
Read moreI happened upon the New River Inn Museum of Fort Lauderdale totally by accident on Monday, January 3 2022. I went in to see after I saw the building and the historical sign outside.
It is a small quaint museum with self-guided or guided tours. It has some interesting information about history of the arrival of Europeans to the area. It shows history of the Seminoles and other native American tribes of the area prior to the arrival of Europeans. It also gives some history of some of the African-American history of the area including how education was minimized for them for many years because of the need for cheap labor for the farms of the area.
It also talks about Fort Lauderdale's contribution to the U.S. war effort during WWII as well as some of the contributions of some individual families efforts to building/changing the Fort Lauderdale area to what it has become today.
More interesting is actually the artists-in-residence on the upper floor of the museum. These artists are allowed work space and allowed to sell their works. It was quite interesting and there was some amazing work. Two of the artists were there at the time and were happy to talk about their work and the work of some of the other artists.
It was definitely worth seeing because it was honest about how today's Fort...
Read moreThis was a hidden treasure to stumble upon on our last day in the area. From entering in the main building (the old hotel), Ms. Sandy greeted my son and I with the warmest welcome. We explored the main building solo and met a wonderful artist named Jenna with jennaswearableart. She does amazing work and she was gracious to show us some other artists work that was being showcased. Following our solo explanation, Ms. Carolyn took us to the old school house replica and had my 7yo so engaged in learning about the first school house in Fort Lauderdale and about the first 14 children who attended. She then took us to the 3rd historic location, the King-Cromartie House which was absolutely AMAZING. It truly was like stepping into the early twentieth century. The house and antiques are so well cared for. Her knowledge of the history of Fort Lauderdale is incredible. I am so glad to have spent our last few hours learning about the area. Thank you Ms. Sandy and Carolyn for your wonderful...
