ArtPrize — Attraction in Grand Rapids

Big letdown. Drove an hour to downtown Grand Rapids on Sunday at 4 PM—perfect weather—but the museums were all closed. Really?! The one Sunday this special annual event happens, and they can’t stay open a little longer?

Street “activities” were almost nonexistent: a Kilms painting exhibit ruined by a political argument and the smell of marijuana, plus two small exhibits at the Amway Hotel.

Art Prize has a good thing going in Grand Rapids. This event brings together people from the area to see art by mainly Michigan artists. Local businesses host the art. Following the maps to find different art installations exposes visitors and residents alike to more of Grand Rapids than they knew existed. Definitely worth a visit. ART PRIZE GR: In my opinion they have spread out the art too much, a normal person will never come close to seeing it all. I liked it so much better when it was concentrated downtown. It is so sparce downtown. The Ford museum is the best. parked beyond the ymca, they also changed the route for the dash bus no runs on pearl street which is the main walk from $3 lot.
