Having been to almost every single Onelife location in the Hampton Roads/Norfolk/etc etc area multiple times, Onelife Fitness Hampton is slacking majorly in the following 3 categories:
Wipes. This location’s most common form of wiping down gym equipment is dispenser paper towels and a spray bottle. Extremely ineffective most of the time for most people. I have to take the bottle and walk it to a machine to spray it or douse a cheap paper towel in dripping chemicals to even try to remotely clean equipment fully after use. Other locations use disposable wipes. Hampton has a few in one corner of the gym. They need the entire gym to adopt this method.
Equipment “rental”. Almost all other locations offer equipment to check out, such as bands, barbell pads, and belts for weighted dips/pull-ups. For some unknown reason that’s well beyond my comprehension, this specific location never got the memo and does not offer this. They also have zero PCP/stretching pipes??? Other locations have these, which are always being utilized for warmups and stretching.
Employee floor mopping. Every time I’ve come here, there are always employees cleaning. This is AMAZING. You hardly see this in generic commercial gyms. HOWEVER, multiple employees have mopped the full length of walkways. This is incredibly dangerous and the wrong way to mop a high-traffic walkway. Floors are to be mopped in halves, so that as one half is drying, there is always a clear dry side to walk on to avoid the risk of slipping. MULTIPLE times I have had to catch myself on wet, slippery walkways at this location.
Honorable mentions:
Someone at the gym decided to buy a dozen or so brand new rope pulldowns, but they ONLY bought the short ropes. Anyone worth their salt running a gym would know the longer rope lengths are far more utilized by many gym goers. They could have bought half short and the other half of the stock as the extended ropes. Tells me whoever is running equipment is slacking in actually lifting and equipment preference.
The free weight dumbbells at this location have the thick grip instead of standard grip. This is a huge downside for many people, and a preference for others. Also, they only have one selection of dumbbells. Other locations have multiple locations of free weight dumbbells
This location doesn’t have boxes or step ups in their turf area except for those stackable ones.
This location does not have a standing pull-up dip station/power tower. This is the first gym I’ve ever seen not have one of those. Huge loss.
As a commendation for this gym that other locations don’t do:
They utilize standard plates instead of bulky rubber ones for certain machines, thus taking up less space.
Their quantity and variety of squat racks and flat bench is excellent
Very clean showers with...

I've only had few sparce emails back and forth between member services who I got their email months after I originally cancelled and they are still refusing the even cancel my membership that I was told was cancelled back in May. This has been the biggest nightmare and an extreme headache to deal with.
Original Post: Wish there was a zero star option. Was called a ton before they opened and promised a women's only section. Signed up and turns out they lied and there was never plans for one. Sales person made sure to only tell me that over the phone and not leave a paper trail. Cancelled the membership once and was told there wouldn't be an issue. Kept getting charged and got all kind of extra charges added for return fees from my bank and the gym and late fee because I didn't put money into an account I didn't think would be charged when I was told it was cancelled. Called to figure out what was going on and was told again it would be cancelled without an issue and to email member services to take care of any back charges. Email them and they want to charge me 3 months plus back charges plus fees to cancel and that I have to pay everything for their employees mistakes and their false advertising because the employees never told them that I was cancelling. I've never worked out at a gym without a women's only section. Went in to talk to the "manager" and she just sat there essentially saying I misheard and that would have never happened and they're not responsible for other employees and what they decided to tell me, especially since they covered themselves by only saying it in person or on the phone and I have no proof. That I would owe all that and there's nothing they care to do because I can't prove anything. Nothing but shady underhandedness here from the sales to membership to all of it. They make sure not to leave a paper trail where it matters. The only way for me to cancel is to get a dire long term illness and doctors note or to completely move where I live and I'll still owe everything. Go literally...
Read moreToday I was told by the GM that he doesn’t care about my TBI that I received from serving in the Air Force because it was not received in their gym.
This amongst the other petty things that I have encountered as a member offends me because I am a 100 percent disabled veteran that was medically retired SMSgt that is also classified as a Wounded Warrior because of the severity of my TBI conditions and I have been an outpatient with the Poly trauma Center at the Veteran Affairs in Richmond VA where I have been seeing 5 occupational therapists because of the severity of my brain injury.
Last year I completely lost the ability to walk, talk, motor skills declined, comprehension and developed social anxiety (bad) and checked every box for I thought my life was over.
So in June I was able to function a little better as a human but still had an uphill battle. In my recovery journey my psychiatrist stated I needed to start trying to acclimate myself back into the world to which was part of my therapy.
My doctors said I needed to start to work out plus start being more social so I had the bright idea to join Onelife gym maybe like 3 months ago.
Long story short I have done Barre, Chair Fitness, Yoga, Strength Lab, Aqua classes, cycling and I have felt so welcomed doing those things such positivity and one a moment I will always remember is taking a group photo with all of the joyous Senior members and having a hug and convo with a 90 year old lady that was so expiring where she was happy that we could train and laugh together.
The only one people I have had an issue with is the Strike Studio which I joined at the time for the discipline of martial arts which I thought would be a parallel to military disciple but I was clearly mistaken because there person at the top has to have those values.
The new General Manager from my conversations with him does not have an appreciation for Disabilities or people that are using the gym to get there lives back in order and so focused on protecting his staff even if they threaten violence against one of their...
