We stumbled upon this place a couple of days ago during a birthday trip to Houston from SWLA. We knew we wanted to check out some nurseries but we werenāt sure where. After quickly searching Google and saw the reviews, we went to Tall Plants.
It took us a minute to find it but, once we did, we were in awe. This place is gorgeous. A repurposed gas station/garage, itās a multi-generational family business that feels like an oasis in the middle of all the concrete and strip malls of Houston.
Pulling up, my wife and I were trying not to freak out when we were indeed greeted by tall plants. Giant fiddle leaf figs, birds of paradise, pothos towers, etc. were peaking through the gates of their courtyard. Yes, they have a damn courtyard! Walking through the store, I found plants that Iāve been searching for for years, plants that I had never seen in person. We totally thought that we wouldnāt be allowed here, that it was too good, too expensive for us humble recent grads who could barely pay for a trip to Home Depot or Loweās. But when we started looking at the prices, we were absolutely shocked.
Plants that I thought would have to go for $50+ were going for less than $20. At the best nursery in our town, a small container of pothos Njoy would go for $25 while Tall Plants has big, bushy plants 3x the size for $18. And these are mature plants. Itās none of the trickery of the big box stores where they stuff 10-12 juvenile plants into a pot to make it look like itās mature. No, these are the real deal.
As we were taking in the sights, we were approached by one of the owners, Henry. Again, this was not the big box experience. We had so many nerd-out conversations about the plants they offered, and every time Iād mention something that I liked, heād disappear and then come back with that very plant along with insight into their care.
At one point, my wife and I were āfightingā because I had picked out three plants, and she wanted me to pick a fourth because it was my birthday. She told me to pick between the watermelon pepperomia and the hoya kerri. I love them both, but they werenāt in the first tier of my wishlist, so I wanted to wait. Iām not sure if Henry overheard us, but he came over and took notice of the plants we tried about to buy, a pictus, the pothos Njoy, and a m. adansonii. I heard him ask if we had check out... something, I couldnāt hear him so I said I hadnāt. He reaches to the ceiling and pulls down their last queen silver satin pothos. Iām in shock. Had he read my mind? As it glittered in the sunlight, I closed my gaping mouth and thanked my good fortune.
Anyway, I could go even further (believe it or not), but our experience at Tall Plants was just amazing. It was the highlight of the day. Not only did I get to be surrounded by beautiful plants, I feel like I made a friend in Henry. Iām sad that we live three hours away, but I think itās best for my wallet if Tall Plants and I have a long-distance relationship. But, itās okay. Now I have a really good reason to...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIāve been buying palm trees from Dennis Chris and Henry for 28 years and can hardly believe itās been that long (just like I can also hardly believe I never came here to give them a review before now either). For a couple of years within that time I was a partner in a landscape business so had access to the wholesale nurseries around town. For the houseplants I buy (never looking for trees so havenāt noticed but pretty sure they have ornamentals since they have a greenhouse) these guys always get the best stock in town.
Iām thinking right now specifically of two other nurseries; oneās the wholesale mackdaddy and oneās retail and somehow manages with no velvet ropes or bouncers to impart an āif Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell did a nurseryā vibe. Both of those places have great stuff and have always been very helpful and very friendly,, but the 9 1/2 ft.³ Alexander and two Kentias I picked up from Chris today are fuller and taller than anything the wholesale magnate has ever had for me, and though itās possible the other retailer I have in mind might.... guess who pays for all that fabulousness of never a leaf out of place and always an army of staff waxing them?
So go see these guys, their pricingās so good I noticed today Chris mustāve had to cut back and start saving money on razorblades and I do kill them fast but I can only buy so many š Iām messing around but itās a family business, they will hook you up, and yeah thereās enough business in Houston to go around and other people do also have good things going, but apples to apples you might find something as good but you wonāt find better. Re Home Depot. Lowes, Houston Garden Centers. etc all thatāit almost seems insulting to say (LOL no not to that chains, to these guys) are in another league, because itās more like...
