I've had two long layovers at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, and I've had to say the secured areas by the gate are fairly standard. But the area outside the tsa check point is very outdated. They force travelers to sleep outside in a "roped" off area between the hours of 11pm and 5am. You're exposed to the open air with little coverage. You better pray it doesn't rain.
My 2nd disappointment bout this airport is the security of the USDA check points. Which can be bypassed if you walk to the far end of the terminal at the international desks and simply walk back without having to put your bag thru an x-ray.
Lastly, unlike other international airports, there is no cleaning done to any of the chairs or resting places in the baggage claim on regular basis unless there is a reason like a large fluid spill.
Overall, I give this airport a 2/5 it has a lot of history and beauty, but has neglected the sanitary side of the...
Read moreAirport is very close to Honolulu downtown hotels, Ubers are always on surge pricing x2 to x4 are common so a 15 minute ride will run $35-$120. Staff is very friendly, both airport, airline and cleaning/maintenance employees, and will provide directions with a smile (all masked up but you see it in their eyes). Many stores and restaurants are closed but enough restaurants are open to load up before a long flight to mainland. Poor signage to airline clubs, and a very long distance to gate. Since most planes are wide body, arrive at least one hour if you are Pre checked and without bags , more if you are checking bags or need to check in. Boarding starts about 45 minutes before departure. When flying into Hawaii, ensure you get clearance using safe travel Hawaii website and verify yourself to the Hawaii desk at the mainland airport of departure to get a clearance bracelet, otherwise you will spend 30-60 minutes in health clearance...
Read moreAh Daniel K Inouye airport, how I hate using you for my regular commute. Plenty of high end retail for the Japanese tourist, but hardly any shops for a simple Diet Coke or Monster. Then try to find something open at 8 am - how dare you ask such an inconvenience. Want to power your devices before your long flight? Not at this airport - hopefully your airline is more accommodating than the airport. TSA precheck? Only at one gate and they still make you pull your electronics, shed your shoes, and drop your belt. I've flown through this airport for 20 years and it's unchanged since my first use - they still have phone booths in some terminals. If there was another choice I'd use it in a heartbeat, but alas they have the monopoly and I am forced into this horrendous, antiquated, transportation hub. Another fine example id the quality facility provided by a state-run...
