The state capitol we have was designed with modern design vocabulary. It is a deviation from the transitional neoclassical capitol that you see in other states. The pond, the open roof, the cone shape chambers, the number of columns, even the number trees are all specific symbolism suggested by the architects.

I love the open air middle gathering place. I love (and hate) how the middle open to the sky. I love the floor tile art in the atrium court. It is a very interesting building. But I do have my complains about the symbolism of our State Capitol: The building is surrounded by a reflecting pool, symbolizing the Pacific Ocean. (text from Wikipedia) My feeling: The two legislative chambers are underground and underwater. Both has the connotation of being buried (underground) or drowning (below water). I never feel comfortable watching our legislators working their heart out in the chambers under water, in a windowless chambers. I feel suffocated. The Capitol is built with an open-air design, allowing sun, wind, and rain to enter; the central atrium opens to the sky and rainbows can sometimes be seen inside the building when it rains. (text from Wikipedia) My feeling: The capitol is "broken" without a proper roof to protect the inhabitant. The missing of comfort overpower the feeling of openness.

Design building is not an easy task. So this is my feeling with my visit to the state Capitol. There are sure someone out there that can make the building more...

It was the mail that made me think about this building. This mail comes every year, handy numbers for all needs. I remember as it was being built so many people was Not happy. I watched from across the street at Honolulu Medical Group, good ole Dr. Nance. Times was changing the neighborhood has to come to an end? A few things around it is still there but? Now a wall goes around it, I feel a bit sad about it. Not sure but didn't it have Koi fishes? Water surrounded with fountain that reach up, just enough for pillars was a tree in need of water to grow. We were invited to take a tour of the story of this building. It was Royal Elementary School, it was a good day. Tour guide he was nice but when it to this structure? He got some answers from us kids and 5 of us did stay after school. Many people of importance were part of our lives. The view above is thing to me. As you look down at that age? Wowww! I thought that I had to tell of a moment. I watch from far and I will hear when it's time for me. I will come to grounds of this building for I need to watch? This young man, who will walk from this building? Across the lawn, sidewalk then? Though the gates of where, I always felt He should be. I hope to see this, I also need to at least vote for him? Adrian K. Tam, I do like...

Hawaii does not nor has it ever belonged to the West Coast or anyone else . It belongs to the Southern Star . It is made from the center of the Southern Star from a special body slamming into it and coming out the other side . Y'all will not fight over Hawaii anymore . These innocent people will not be caught in y'all's bullshit wars . The Southern and Lone Star oversee Hawaii . It has been set in stone and written in the stars . When we consolidate this country into 3 sections , Hawaii will be a meeting place run by the Southern Star . Otherwise y'all will never quit enslaving and killing over it . Because none of you have rite . I do . It's over . It's officially over. Shame on all who has taken up arms against the innocent and the righteous. I am at liberty to say CHEEEEEEHOOOOOO . 🤙💯. THINGS ARE SET RITE . BUT ITS NOWHERE NEAR OVER . DECENT PEOPLE DONT HAVE TO TRY TO BE DECENT. Michael D....

Having visited over a half of US Capitols I can say this one is the most unusual one, and one of the most interesting. It's located just behind the Iolani palace, which I strongly recommend visiting. Unlike many neoclassic Capitols with the central dome all across the US, this one is a modern square building. The central inner space is open air, atrium like, while the offices and both houses are scattered around it on 5 floors. Upon entering is an airport style security checkpoint, after which you can proceed. I suggest first going up the top floor terrace from where you'll have great views over Honolulu. Then you can descend down via stairs and visit accessible areas depending if there's a session - we were let in the Governor's office

The only open air capital in America and the only one you can see the ocean from! The good: friendly people, neat artwork tucked in offices, you can access the observation platform on the top floor to get a view of the city and ocean. The bad: no guided tour, no gift shop, Senate and House are not open unless in active session. Artwork is in offices, with very little out in the open for public viewing, so shy people won't see much of it. The ugly: silly security setup so you have to go through check points more than any other capital we have been in (more than at the White House even!), parking fees went up again, it is now $2 per hour to park (max 4 hours).
