This historic building was built over 100 years ago with funds from many sources including contributions from the philanthropist and industrial magnate Andrew Carnegie!

This building has many good reads, references and helpful employees to cheerfully direct you. This multi tiered, multi room complex boasts a variety of nooks to get yourself lost in a book!

The compound is nice, though over run by drifters who are simply looking for shelter and a power outlet. The bathroom facilities has unfortunately been victimized by the countless homeless who go in and out with their massive amounts of personal belongings. It is not clean or deodorised very well. It's sad, but I like that they don't turn people away just for being poor.

One thing I would change is the standards of entry- perhaps only those who possess an identification card, and/or a library card. It should be better looked after especially since it is literally right next to one of the most important monuments in U.S. and Hawaiian history- I'olani Palace!

All in all, a great place to study and do research. I have been able to start a business and do investment research with the facilities and information available here. The Hawaii public library has been a wonderful resource for me. I regularly donate money here and on my tax forms for...

The Libby App...needs to be retired. Barely a month in, it is a horrible program. There is a feature to download items, for reading offline. Online is atrocious, It would be faster if I hand wrote the page! The response time, with good connection, is almost non-existent. My app was set to download all items, the little icons (for all my items) spun for days, nothing was downloaded. I finally got it to stop and have not bee able to download a single magazine. Attempt to read a magazine are so frustrating. Turning a page takes forever, I am not sure if it is not responding to my touch or taking forever, at which point, when a new page appears, there is no way of telling how may pages you advanced, it is like following a ball in a ping pong match. There is not one thing that I find useful in this app. Tutorials - from this website and beyond - have not been helpful. I now dread opening the Libby app. What took me 10 or 15 minutes to read a magazine, now takes hours, as I need to step away, or risk the urge to smack my iPad against something, which unfortunately would not break Libby. I am nowhere near doing the same amount of tasks that I was pre-Libby. I see a parting of ways in my near future. It does not deserve the one star I am forced to choose, that is above and...

Aloha They need to put a metal detector at the entrance for the safety for all @ all libraries in Hawaii. Great place to relax and read but freaks from the streets or none born or raised Hawaii residents need to go back where they come from. I saw a African mid 50's or 60's , 200lbs, pot belly, short curly salt /pepper hair, black back pack guy yell @ a white homeless guy get away from me- that startled myself and anther guy. The white guy looked at the black guy in fear. Then, the African guy grabbed something from in his pants on the right side and it was a black blade knife six inches in size. I noticed it and the African guy acted like he wasn't doing anything wrong. He walked into the library for a couple minutes and returned to where his back pack on the 1st table near the entrance of the second floor doorway was. I was writing a letter when this commotion happened. The African guy minded his own business and went back to whatever he was doing. I left the library and told the security about the situation and African guy. Be careful everyone watch your surroundings. Hawaii is not the same. God bless America and...

My visit to the Hawaii State Library was indeed a highlight of my Honolulu trip! The library boasts a tidy array of assorted books and offers a serene reading area. The architecture is remarkable, melding Roman influences with an Asian courtyard design. There are plenty of tables, desks, and chairs spread throughout the corridors for visitors to sit, read, and study, though there are no power outlets available. The library staff were courteous and helpful. Facilities such as restrooms and photocopying services (at a cost of $0.15 per page) are also provided. It's a must-see for any book lover!

I grew up in this large building with Royal Elementary School. I visited after all these years and the librarian found 1 of my favorite book in a large vision. I was so pleased that I teared up. Read it and I was filled with joy. I thank her as I cried, for it was a moment of comfort in the kid in me.

Came as a librarian on vacation. Very solid building nearby to the Iolani Palace. Operates as a friendly, well organized public library. Staff were nice and talkative. Only suggestion is to have something for curious tourists - a bookmark or souvenir library card as a tchotchke.
