They tell you to arrive @ 8:30 but the tour guide arrived at 8:43 and had to stop by the house. It a small island and island life so expect that. Rough but short bumpy ride to water edge. The mud you WILL have to step through without shoes will be up to your calves. It’s stinks very badly of Sulphur (rotten eggs) it is gross but you can wash it off once you are in the kayak and they rinse you feet throughly when you get back to the van. My 10 year old and a couple with reduced mobility in their 70’s did it. The kayaking was nice and the Bioluminescence was cool. Would definitely recommend going on a moonless night for the best experience. We could see it but it wasn’t as grand due to the fact that we had 56% luminosity from the moon. Our only downside side is I was kayaking with my 10 old daughter as my wife didn’t feel safe being responsible for her in a kayak if something happened. So my wife wasn’t allowed to kayak by herself and forced to ride with another man who sat in front of her and he didn’t listen to the instructor or the group and kept taking my wife away from the guided tour and conversation even after they kept calling him back. This guy was a tool who said he had adhd and too much energy but ruined the experience for us because we wanted to be together and due to this operation decision forced my wife to ride with a stranger who was a complete idiot and ignored my wives repeated request and wishes to experience this near her family that she flew 6 hours and spent thousands of dollars to experience. We came to Puerto Rico specifically for this one experience. If I wasn’t with my daughter it would have turned ugly!Heartbreaking!! There clearly had extra kayaks and I see photo of people going by themselves. The guides decision ruined our experience. So for a crushing and disappointing experience ruined I cannot...
Read moreWe had a wonderful and magical night with The Pirate Bio Bay Tour! We took the 7pm tour on the night of a waning crescent (20%) moon and the bioluminescence was super strong and beautiful. The idea of taking canoes out into the water at night on an island you don’t know sounds scary, but The Pirate Bio Bay Tour made us feel extremely safe and confident. It sounds like the biobay companies in Vieques are all around very experienced, organized, and safe. If you’re thinking twice about booking this tour, rest assured that you’ll have a safe and worthwhile experience on the calm waters of the bio bay.
Our tour guide Gabo was really funny and provided interesting information about the phytoplankton and ecosystem. He even pointed out some visible planets in the sky. The highlight of our experience was paddling to the center of the bay and seeing a large nurse shark swim underneath our completely clear canoe. It was amazing to see the dozens and dozens of fish scattering below us, providing bright light as they moved. All in all, this was a truly beautiful, once in a lifetime experience.
While this didn’t have a significant impact on our tour or the visibility of the bioluminescence, there’s a large light coming from the island that provided a slight shine (like moonlight) on the water. I believe this is a sports field on the island that stays on until 9pm. The 9pm tour is probably a bit darker for this reason, but we were glad to book the 7pm tour so we could enjoy the rest of our evening without getting back too late. Thanks to everyone at The Pirate Bio...
Read moreI can only leave a review based on the experience I did not have. I researched and chose Pirate Bio Bay months in advance based on reviews and the fact that they seemed to be the only tour company offering glass bottom boats. I was traveling with someone special who had never been to Puerto Rico, and I really wanted to show him all the things that made Puerto Rico special. It's not the tour company's fault that our GPS took us in circles, or that none of the streets have signs to know their names, or that driving in a foreign, rural area at night is challenging. But they could definitely communicate better. I reached out to say we were lost, and I was given another GPS coordinate. No landmark, sign or name on a building or storefront, just a GPS pin drop. Yes, they kindly refunded my money, but what we really wanted was the experience. Communication, simple but thorough communication could've made all the difference. Every dirt road looks the same at 9:00 at night. Just a simple landmark - there were bars and shops still open. Could the meeting place have an actual name, not just a GPS coordinate on a dark road? So yes, I'm deeply disappointed. Ferry wait times (3 hours instead of 30 minutes to an hour), an additional hotel stay after traveling over from Fajardo, and an additional jeep rental - all for nothing....
