I may be the odd one out, and maybe this is just a fluke, but I had a TERRIBLE experience with Shane company quality that they literally drove me to tears. I have never ever left such a bad review in my life, but the numerous problems that this ring presented warrant it.
My boyfriend proposed to me several years ago on a vacation before Christmas (2017), and within a day of wearing the ring (not doing any sports or hard wear and tear) I looked down and noticed that the diamond was loose. Upon closer examination, the prong was already broken on this-in one single day! The explanation given to us by Shane was that they thought maybe there was a bubble in the gold when it was heated up that caused the prong to be weak and break easily. I spent the remainder of my vacation not wearing the ring that I was so excited to show off. I then went home for the holiday season, and couldn't show the ring to my family because Shane company was closed those days leading up to Christmas, and I felt like it ruined that entire first couple of weeks where I should have been showing my friends and family and sharing my excitement. It was after the holidays by the time it was fixed and returned.
To be fair, they comped us with I believe a $75 gift card, which meant a lot to a couple of poor graduate students at the time, but could never bring that experience back. By the time I saw my family again, the novelty of the engagement was gone for them (like many, I don't see every one in my family much outside the holidays), so I never got that moment with them, and that's priceless. I showed them pictures of my ring on my phone at Christmas instead.
My boyfriend who had saved up for a long time for something he hoped to show off to my family, felt utterly humiliated and embarrassed because he thought they'd think he had gotten some rinky dink ring for their daughter/granddaughter since it had already broken within 24 hours. He may have been even more crushed than I.
I additionally would like to comment on the warranty. At first it didn't seem too bad, but after shopping around, the 6 month check-in requirement in order to keep the warranty seemed to be the exception not the norm with jewelry stores. Most required a check-in only once a year, and some said "we guarantee your center and surrounding stones for the life of the ring, no checkups needed" - I'm looking at you, Richter & Phillips in Cincinnati, good on ya for that. I think that after my terrible experience almost completely losing the center stone in a single day after receiving the most expensive piece of jewelry I'll likely ever own, I would want a better warranty than that. Plus, if I ever moved from Louisville, and this is not a chain store, it would be difficult to do this without paying to ship it out every six months for weeks at a time where I couldn't wear it, just to keep the warranty.
I also had problems with the design of the ring itself. Beautiful floral look, but the actual band had some sharp edges on it rather than being rounded all the way. After some simple activities with the ring, I noticed it was actually leaving nicks and cuts in my skin where those edges would catch when it moved suddenly. Although I loved the floral design of the ring, this feature that cut me ( literally at least once a week ) as well as the constant feeling that the other stones in the ring weren't secure and might fall out like the center, left a bad taste in my mouth regarding this company. I fully intended on being a return customer until this saga of issues with the very first piece of jewelry I had bought from them.
I had heard great things about this company from friends, and unfortunately was very disappointed myself. However, it seems that my poor experience was (hopefully) an exception and...
Read moreI had heard of Shane and seen billboards but put it off cause I didn't really understand it while I went to jewelry store after jewelry store. Mom and pop shops, Jared's, you name it.
Finally went in though and immediately it felt different. They don't have watches and lower quality stones and it really feels like they're focused exclusively on diamond/ruby/sapphire/pearls, which is good cause it's even written on the building. On top of that, they are non commission and no haggle. This is huge for me. Maybe some people like to barter but having just bought a car, I HATE the negotiation process and commission makes it much harder to trust a rep. I started with one woman and she had no problem handing me off to another woman who specialized in gems. And both were just awesome people.
I stressed I wanted rose gold and to not have to wait around months for it to arrive and she made sure we went over EVERY ring in the store plus we looked at all the rose gold rings on the website. I decided on one that they had in store that needed to have a gem mounted and taken down half a size. Much to my surprise, they were able to do that within a couple hours and I walked out with it same-day.
Best part is they have a 60 day return policy so I can still shop around. And for the rest of forever if you want to upgrade the gemstone, you only pay the difference. No restocking fee or anything with returns even though it was resized and since it isn't commission there's no guilt in it. I walked out with a ring and virtually zero risk of taking a financial hit if I want to change something.
Shane Co also makes their own designs in somewhat limited quantity so they're fairly unique and it cuts out the designer middle man. Plus like a car dealership, if another store has the ring you want you can have it sent to your local store in a day or two.
Cleaning and a whole bunch of other things are free forever. They'll even replace a lost gemstone for free if it comes loose.
One last little detail is I called the store and it's an actual recording of Tom Shane giving info about that particular store. I think there's about 20 stores so it wouldn't be too much work for him but still, it's the little details. Means a lot that people know who he is. All the workers there knew about him and there seems to be a strong company culture.
And as far as I know you can bring in a gem to have it mounted or bring in a ring and get a gemstone. So if you like a particular ring you can pick from their huge gemstone collection or if you want moissenite or a lab grown diamond in one of their rings I think they can do that too.
Overall, could not be happier with the experience at Shane Co so far. Thanks especially to...
Read moreSo, I am editing a review from a long time ago, as I have recently been troubled by some changes they have made. I have purchased several pieces from Shane Co. over the past 10yrs., or so. My wife will typically bring her pieces in about every 3mos. and clean them at home on a semi-weekly basis. Every time we have brought them in within the past couple years, it feels like we are being berated about needing to have them cleaned more often and not wearing them all the time. Every time we bring them in it seems they need to be left for a week (Give or take a couple days) to be rhodium dipped. I feel like cleaning them weekly at home, in addition to having them cleaned there 4 times a year, should be more than adequate. Also, when each of these items were purchased, nothing was ever said about not wearing them daily, which I feel defeats the purpose. While the associates are quite friendly, it has become a bit of an inconvenience to have to keep up with so much maintenance on my wife's jewelry. I am typically the one who picks up the jewelry from the shop when it is ready. This process used to be very simple, just going to the back counter. Recently, I have found you have to wait around for 20mins. for someone to even acknowledge you, then you have to wait around for another associate to be available just to go and pick your jewelry up from the back. Spending 30mins. standing around when I used to be in/out in 5mins. or less has made me really annoyed when picking up anything. It seems a better option would be to have a couple associates dedicated to shop work & pickups so people who are not there to shop are not hanging around...
