They pay hardly anything for books, CDs and DVDs - even recent hits or classics. If you have very new hit blu-rays or Criterion Collection or rare or out of print stuff, they might pay $5-10. You might as well give anything else to a thrift shop or library or sell online. Maybe go to Book & Music Exchange, which has a much bigger blu-ray selection.
I like the atmosphere of Half Price Books better and they take every thing you bring in usually - unless it's heavily worn, moldy or water damaged. But they pay pennies on the dollar for most discs & books, even things they are selling or have sold for $4-5 or more on shelf. I prefer the Westport Rd store and find they usually pay more (so do a couple of my friends). The Hurstbourne store charges more for a lot of things like $3+ for Blu-rays on clearance when Westport Road is $2.
It is a good idea to check online to see what you can get (from places like Amazon, AbundaTrade or eBay) for used media and refuse HPB offer for less. Online sellers pay for shipping on large enough trades like $25 and even if they only pay $1 for a CD or movie it's probably more than HPB will pay, with some rare exceptions for out of print titles that may bring more at HPB. Do your homework before you sell, ask what they are paying for EACH item if they try to low-ball you, and be ready to walk if there are better offers online. Take care of your stuff, too, and you will get the best deal. Nobody wants discs with fingerprints or scratches that might not play smoothly. HPB is usually as cheap as the lowest Amazon seller (with shipping), but there are...
Read moreThis place has a huge selection of books, vinyl records, CDs, DVDs, blu-rays, used video games, and more. They have really friendly staff, a separate counter from the checkouts where you can drop off your trade in stuff for a quote while you shop, and your trade in appraisal doesn't involve waiting in the checkout line, or holding up that line while they process your appraisal. Lots of helpful staff. They even buy, organize, bag and resell bundles of legos, Lego minifigures and other toys.
Their used tablets selection is super antiquated; I think they buy them based on Ebay pricing but then they don't keep the inventory of tablets (and similar electronics) flowing out the door fast enough to keep their stock at least moderately up to date. The tablet market is one that has a lot of "$50 new" competition that actually sets the bar moderately high for any cheap used android tablet to be worth it above about $20-30. The one model I saw was 4+ years old.
I didnt set out writing this review intending to talk down to them for a tablet of all things, I just found it odd to see it sitting in there, and it came to mind. Constructive criticism to them might be to skip buying used tablets. It's just inventory that's gonna sit and wither away faster than they get a return on it, and the longer it sits the less likely it is to work or be useful for a customer. It's a lose-lose, and I love this store enough to only want them...
Read more"I tried to sell them a brand new, never used Best-Seller that was in their store for $10" .... The 10 dollar one they were selling WAS brand new from the publishing company, they usually give you 25% off of brand new items. They can't tell that you have never red the book, unless it was wrapped in plastic and not opened. A lot of people ( me included ) can read a book and not damage the spine. I find it funny that you expect them to sell a book for 7 bucks, and offer you, what? 5 for it? That wouldn't be enough for them to keep the book that might not sell in their inventory, let alone pay their employees to catalog the books, shelf them, and run a cash register. Not to mention the fact that they may have to mark it down on clearance eventually. Then they paid you 50 cents for something they will sell for 2 bucks. How is that 95% return? They are gambling on what they buy from you.
If you expect to get a lot for trade-in merch, then you should try to sell it yourself. But if you don't want to waste your time which would also be valuable, then you go here.
Geez, it's almost like they are a business.
It's called craigslist. Sell things on there. Do the work and you WILL get a lot of the money you spent on it back, but don't expect to go to a place that sells books for half price or less and expect them you give you half of...
