Centennial Hall Convention Center — Attraction in Juneau

I took my daughter, on a mother/daughter outing, to see Michael W. Smith in concert at Centennial Hall. It was our first visit to the Hall itself. The concert was all I had thought it would be, ending with a very touching tribute by Michael W. Smith in regards to his father and the message of God's love for each and every one of us: "That's my son, that's my daughter; in my eyes, it's as though they're the ones that hung the moon." If all goes well, Michael W. Smith will be returning, in concert, during the summer of 2022.

Centennial Hall has a fun, irregular shape; although, structured and angular as most institutional type buildings are. It was incredibly clean and nicely appointed in regards to its interior decorations. The women's bathroom was also clean and well maintained. The exterior of the building stands out, within the community, as being well preserved and cared for. Over-all, based on cleanliness, and the helpfulness of the volunteer staff, present for this event, I would've given Centennial Hall a 5 star rating.

However, it's the seating and auditorium that caused me to give a 4 star rating instead. The ceiling within the auditorium is high, and the interior spacious, the lighting was well done, as was the sound during the performance by Michael W. Smith and the choir/crew of individuals he had with him. The problem was the seating. Although the blue padded chairs were comfortable, I had anticipated a completely different set-up in my mind. As Centennial Hall is used as a multi-purpose facility I imagine this is why it wasn't set-up as you'd imagine a typical show, done within an arena, would be. However, I also would think that a building such as this, where performances are held, would have seating available that could be wheeled in and stacked up much like bleacher seating but with the chairs themselves as those found within a theater; where there is no bad seat, in the house, to be had. As it's laid out, if you don't get to the show early, you'll be stuck in the back watching the action take place on a large, movie like screen instead.

All seating is laid out in straight rows facing the stage. There is no graduating slope up or incline to the seating, and that's unfortunate. To improve, I would suggest that the powers that be invest in safe, collapsible, graduated seating that can be rolled into place before a show and removed easily afterwards.
