This is a nice and well-maintained trail tucked away unsuspectingly in the city. Great view of the KC skyline and of the KU med center. However, there are a few things that folks might want to make note of before going here:
the trail is very rocky. I went here to run and almost twisted my ankle/tripped several times. Would be fine if you are just hiking but not ideal for biking or running. It also didn't help that I went in December and the leaves were covering up a lot of the rocks on the trail so I was hard to tell where I was stepping.
the trail zigzags through the side of a hill that looks like it used to be some sort of dump site. Lots of large pieces of metal, tired, and random scraps of junk lying around. Would not recommend wearing anything but sturdy tennis shoes/boots out there. Be careful if you are taking your dog on the trail -- they could easily step on something sharp.
there is not great signage along the trail. The entrance is very hidden; it's just behind a very old and completely faded sign near the parking area. There was only one official sign that I saw on the trail and lots of colored ribbons which probably marked different paths but no way to tell what they meant. I know the trail is undergoing some re-routing and property ownership changes, so the poor signage may be a...
Love hiking here. It’s beautiful, multiple access/exit points, varying degrees of difficulty, never really very “busy.” Great way to escape the city, while in the city, and especially perfect if you only have an hour or less. Great view of downtown from Rosedale Arch (prohibited by trees somewhat in the summer). Somewhat dense foliage during the hike on either sides, trail gets narrow. Single file line if hiking with others. Insect repellant recommended (straight up lemon eucalyptus oil works best, if not a fan of DEET). Not the best if you’re seeking bird/wildlife encounters. Watch for spider webs that are inevitably across the path - I always find a decent size stick/twig (best if it’s bushy/has leaves still) and use that to hold in front of me. Works like a charm. Some water features by the Fischer Park part of the trails. They also have a “Pump Pit” hidden in there - a small loop designed with small hills and sharp turns for biking...
Read moreNice trail system. Needs better trail markers and maintenance. Don't go on this trail without a picture of the trail map. Trails are not marked throughout(tree markers), only at trail splits. Several side trails that aren't on the map. Can easily confuse those who aren't good at telling direction. Try not to split from trail unless a split is indicated. Lots of broken glass throughout the trails and what looks like a dump on garden gnome. With the glass and rougher terrain, you definitely want appropriate footwear. Very close to the road, cars drown out nature noises. Not a place for you if you're looking for quiet. Don't forget the bugspray, the mosquitoes are...
