Thinking about renting a booth, vending with Hudson's, I strongly advise against it. Having worked with the previous owner's The Haggle Shop for two decades, The Grills family set the bar very high for me. As someone who has written several books about Kingsport, Tennessee, my hometown - I am someone in Kingsport who advocates for small business to succeed. The staff at Hudson's are exceptional, Lanie and Kathy are great and Nessa and others, but it's the owner Selina whom I had several issues with. Once committed to 5 booths (4 on the Mezzanine and one on the third floor) when I began stocking my booth with the seven different decks of playing cards I've created, when the owner saw these she commented that cards are used for divination and gambling and that her store is dedicated to Jesus and I could not sell them there. I am a Christian, by the way, so I was insulted as I know several families who congregate for card games and they aren't going to bust hell wide open. Within a few weeks once the store actually opened I perused the various booths and what did I see as far as goods this owner was selling? Playing cards. I guess she did not want the competition. One day the owner calls and says they are moving all of my booths to the upstairs - third floor and I needed to come and make sure that happened. I did. Now the third floor is accessible only by stairs so it doesn't get as much traffic as the third floor or the Mezzanine but there is no discount as a vendor to be on the third floor. When this happened also the owner took numerous items out of my booth and stowed them away so that no customers would have a chance to purchase these items. This included furniture that would have sold if it were displayed and blue jars and glasses that she deemed were more for "yard sales" and not her store. Another day they are rearranging the first floor with some heavier items which needed to be moved and I was asked if I could come and assist. I did for several hours and there was another man there I'd never met before and he and I were doing a majority of the work while she directed (straw bossed) and he and I worked. But she kept belittling this man and saying really unkind things to him. I finally asked him "You're just here volunteering like me. Why are you letting her talk to you like that?" He offered, "I have no choice. She's my wife." Initially, when I began stocking my booths, especially on the third floor I had several heavy pieces of furniture and would need assistance so I asked my friend PD at the record shop across the street if he knew anyone with a strong back and maybe down on their luck that could work for a few hours and make $50. He put me in touch with a semi-homeless man named Scott whom is also a disabled veteran like myself and we agreed a time and the man worked hard for a few hours, didn't bother anyone at all - just kept his head down and followed orders and earned his $50. After I paid the man when I came back into the store the owner immediately berated me for letting what she called a "vagrant" into her store. Very Un-Christlike behavior on her part. I could easily keep writing grievances as to why I no longer will do business with Hudson's General Store. And like I said - it isn't the staff. They've been great. I've spoken with other vendors who are still there and some who've have also left and many of them feel like the owner is just a bully. I don't care much for bullies. 1 John 3:18 - Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed...
Read moreWent this past weekend and got a bunch of snacks, turns out they were all expired or do not even have an expiration date- so I will go ahead and assume they’re expired like the rest. This store has tons of candy and snacks for sale but clearly they’re not rotating out expired inventory which sucks for me after spending 30$ there and having to throw it all away. Definitely won’t be back.
I am editing my review since the owner commented, and then revised their response. I was charged full price for everything that was purchased, the Best Buy for the items were for last summer so I do not buy the excuse that their last two deliveries were “quickly expired” unless they only receive deliveries every 6 months since the dates were 7 months + old. The candy bars were white which is what prompted me to check the expiration date and being as I was pregnant at the time I would not put something that was expired over 7 months into my body. To say “we could’ve worked something out if you were notified”- the review was my notification. I threw everything in the trash and as I said before will never be back as this was my first impression of this store. Charging premium prices for...
Read moreToday, we went antiquing in Kingsport, Tennessee and decided to check out Hudson’s General Store and Antiques. Formerly The Haggle Shop, the Hudson’s General Store and Antiques, opened in 2023, the building’s centennial year. True to its name, Hudson’s General Store and Antiques offers a delightful selection of kitchen items (don’t miss their super cute tea towels!), home goods, and decor. With 4 floors of antiques to peruse, the sections are well organized and charming; most are even presented with thoughtfully designed vintage vignettes. Throughout the shop, the owners have also showcased their own personally curated collection of classic and unique relics that, although not for sale, are still fascinating to view. The staff are extremely helpful and welcoming. We were quite impressed and plan to...
