I went to see the hummingbirds for the Hummingbird Xtravaganza and it was amazing! I gave 4 stars because of the prices of things but I understand it's for the organization and it's upkeep. For anyone though that loves nature and birds this was spectacular! Not only did I enjoy the native plant sale (which is also self serve any time of the week you can pick up a plant and pay for it at the main building by the way!) they were also banding and letting you symbolically adopt a hummingbird! They had tables and a waiting area so you could see them band each bird and if you adopted one you could see your bird before they released it again! Several areas were also available with kids activities and educational things about wildlife! The volunteers were super nice and helpful, as well as patient, when I was asking about certain plants. All in all I enjoyed myself just walking around and enjoying the outdoors looking at the beautiful native plants they had planted and seeing the tiny tiny little...

GCBO was a peaceful and tranquil respite. I came upon several fresh ‘Crawdad’s Turret’ where crawfish dig into the clay soil and build a clay turret. It was like a sculpture. I saw tanagers, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks and other birds that I couldn’t identify. I would wear waterproof boots the next time because my sneakers got damp from walking on the grassy trail covered with dewdrop. It was my first time at GCBO and it seemed deserted so I was a bit nervous being in an unfamiliar place by myself, initially. Then, a couple, who I assumed worked at the place waved from a distance and I felt more relaxed knowing there were other people present. Peggy and Sonny, a retired couple were volunteers (I think) who gave me helpful recommendations of trails to hike and I had a delightful conversation with them. I was there on May 8, so I missed the migratory birds but I still enjoyed my...

National Bird

Mid afternoon on 10/26/2014. I was driving through Wild Peach on Rd. 353 near the intersection of Rd. 704. West bound. I looked up at a group of buzzards circling in the sky to my left. One of the "buzzards" had a very white head and white tail feathers. And dark brown feathers on the rest of him. Yes - A Bald Eagle. Only the second one I have ever seen in Brazoria county. The mail box on the nearest house had the name...

The Xtreme Hummingbird Xtravaganza was educational, fun, and amazing! Great booths. My favorite was watching the children, learn about & hold a Hummingbird in their hands, then release them. The live snakes and touch tank were neat! I purchased a shell ginger, at the native plant sale. The observatory has hiking trails & look outs. Books, jewelry, T-shirts and more, in the building. Great family fun!

The place was full of small songbirds. The eagles nest was across the river. They have a number of "environments" like a rose garden, palm garden, herbs, butterfly garden, wetlands, waterfall, and more. We went late Feb, and some of the areas needed weeding and fresh plantings, but the wildflowers were blooming nicely. Paths were mowed and maintained. Some memorial benches needed repair.
