Okay, so I have mixed feelings about this place which I'll explain here. Maybe a little too much in depth, but ya know, I have feelings about this experience.
Everything started off great, we were greeted by very friendly staff members and were excited to start exploring. We purchased a boop card and started exploring the store, there's so much to see and so many tiny details on the products, I really loved it. I picked up a daikon to buy later, but once we ventured out of the store a staff member took it from me and told me it would be waiting for me at the end (in the exact position I'd put it in ๐ ). Fine by me! I needed my hands free for mystery solving.
We queued for the bar and sat and had a cocktail. They were really great, and again, so many details in the bar.
Finally we started the mystery and ventured upstairs. I'm a sucker for a mystery so was fully invested in this. I was beeping my boop card at every station and calling every phone number I found. The space is so well done and innovative, it's like a giant adult's playground. There were so many intricate details and funny little things.
Anyway, we were making progress and putting together clues but then we're approached by a staff member telling us we had to leave as there had been a buyout. We weren't finished though so this was super disappointing to hear, I wanted to make it to the end, even if we didn't solve/finish the mystery I wanted to explore all I could.
We had not been told about this buyout, my friend and I are from Canada and the UK and had preplanned everything on our trip and bought tickets to Omega Mart months in advance. Had we known about the buyout we would have tried to move them to an earlier time or different day; we had time in our schedule to do so. I'd read online it can take up to 4 hours or even more to fully explore, and we'd only been there 3 (stopping at the bar included).
The staff member who greeted us at the entrance got rather argumentative and hostile with us telling us that they had told us about it as we entered. They definitely hadn't, we would have skipped the bar if we'd known. Then someone else asked us 'how long have you been here?', we answered honestly saying 3 hours, to which they responded 'well, that's a long time, it should be enough'. This kinda stung, I had been enjoying discovering all the small details in the experience. They also said it was on the website, but why didn't they email ticket holders with the info that we'd have to leave early? We had prebooked them I guess before the buyout was arranged as there was no mention of it.
Anyway, the buyout and the way our lack of information was handled (we were basically called liars) really soured the experience. I had been having a blast, but then it suddenly turned into one of the negative parts of our trip. I also didn't even get to buy myself my new daikon friend which saddened me, he temporarily...
ย ย ย Read moreI explored Area 15's famous Omega Mart, where you can browse a supermarket that has some questionable items for sale. When I visited, I assumed this was only some creative viewing exhibit, but then I spotted someone hiding behind a fridge and I followed them inside. What would come next was an adventure that would keep me in that market for hours!
Because I didn't know how complex this attraction would be, I did not know that I needed to buy a card to solve the mystery that visitors could crack. The card would allow you to unlock areas that most people couldn't. It wasn't a big deal though, because just walking around took over three hours; intentionally trying to find every clue could've been something I'd have to dedicate my entire day to.
As a visitor who didn't dive deeply into the lore of the Omega Mart, it was still an incredible excursion. I went with my partner and we both were fascinated by the time & detail put into the wacky settings. Some rooms were very calming with ethereal music, another had strobe lights and we danced with strangers. There were activities people could do- even without the card- like talking to robots and calling a Worm Dating Hotline (No kidding, that exists).
This is a very active place that requires you to walk around a lot, climb, and walk up stairs to witness everything. It is still suitable for visitors who are not athletic, but may pose concern for those with joint issues. This can also be an overstimulating experience, especially for young children. That was the case for a group I saw between the ages of 3-6 who were whining as their parents who were investigating the store.
I wanted to get a memento of my time at Omega Mart, so I bought a shirt and a cleaner-toy hybrid that I affectionally named, "Hennison." Definitely get a souvenir, as most of these items are too rare to be found anywhere else. Perhaps you'd like a can of "Liquid Death" or sushi thumbtacks, or even a flask shaped like a banana.
The Omega Mart isn't the only thing inside Area 15 worth checking out, but it should be the FIRST thing you stop by. It will take you a while to discover everything, but it'll be so worth it. Invite your family & friends, it's an experience you'll...
