I attended the monthly ladies class that is held the first Thursday of the month that is $20. I called ahead that day and was told the topic of the class was AR-15. I was really excited to learn more about the rifles! What happened instead was very disappointing. Noticeable errors were present and egregious safety violations occurred in the class.
When I entered the class, the instructor, Darius, was talking about his personal protection work for celebrities as well as his TV appearances. He said he is on TV very frequently and doesn't like when people walk up to him and recognize him. Apparently he is a widely recognized personality. I've never seen or heard of him but I don't watch much TV.
Class began just fine. Darius isn't articulate but I thought would probably still have valuable information. Shortly into the class, I noticed some information that just didn't sound correct. The third time I heard something that didn't sound correct, I started taking notes so I could verify my knowledge and do research to get deeper understanding. What I learned is that the information presented is inaccurate.
Noticeable errors:
Darius explanation of rifling is inaccurate. He mentioned AR-15 barrels have various rifling ratios including 1:7, 1:8, 1:9, however his description of what those ratios indicate was incorrect.
Darius description of .223 and 5.56 ammo was also inaccurate. He stated that .223 is strictly for civilian use and 5.56 is solely for military use. Not quite sure how I was able to purchase 5.56 ammo and have it in my bag since I have no military experience.
Egregious oversights:
Early in the class, Darius took a few .223 rounds from his AR magazine and gave one to each student to examine and hold. These rounds were not collected. Later in the class, Darius passed around his rifles so we could look through his optics. Two of the rifles he passed around were the same caliber as the round of ammo that I still had sitting on the table in front of me. He also passed around a 9mm firearm for us to see. I had a round of ammo as well as a rifle that uses that ammo in my possession, in a classroom at the same time. Incredible safety violation! I definitely hope no one is injured in future classes.
The students were taken to the range to shoot an AR-15 as well as .22. We had great supervision when shooting the AR-15 and good instruction for the .22. A few of us had brought personal firearms. We were given permission to choose a lane and shoot. At this time, we had absolutely no supervision at all. No RSO was present. There was one instructor teaching with the .22 pistol and no one else present to watch what the students were doing with their own firearms.
Also during the class, Darius bragged about killing a man with a AR-15 rifle. He told a story about a man committing various crimes, and the FBI and Metro being unable to capture the individual. This criminal then broke into Darius house or something and he killed the man that no one else could catch. Darius stated that he wasn't proud of what he did, but was very excited to tell the ladies class about it.
In summary, the ladies classes held at Discount Firearms and Ammo are unsafe and filled with inaccurate information. I will not be returning to this program unless it changes drastically. I was excited to attend a program just for ladies and was extremely disappointed with the result.
Joseph A Wyson, the owner of Discount Firearms and Ammo was contacted about this but never responded. I wanted to give him the opportunity to respond to this privately, however no response was received. I received an email asking me to review Discount Firearms and Ammo based on...
Read moreI’ve been a long-time resident of Las Vegas, but had only visited one or two shooting ranges in Clark County – and that was some time ago. Until recently, I’d typically go to BLM land to go shooting as I had the fundamental equipment.
However, I now have one daughter starting college and another in high school and have been shooting more frequently as my daughters have shown increasing interest in shooting. In fact, they now wish to refine their marksmanship skills and not just continue to do random plinking. Thus, the need to find a range.
Because of this, over the 2 months prior to writing this review, I’ve been on a mission to find a range where my daughters and I would be comfortable and feel like I'm not paying too much.
I quickly discovered that many of the ranges in the area focus on the tourists and charge rates so high that I’d rather just spend the money on enhancing my BLM trips. While I understand that tourists are usually willing to pay a higher amount for normal things other than someone not on vacation (especially if it is a new experience to them), I was surprised so many ranges made absolutely no effort to get locals in the door during their slow times (such as when the tourists are just waking up).
I made several visits to various ranges over both weekends and weekdays, as well as mornings and afternoons, and at some ranges I found the lanes nearly empty and yet I was paying some of the highest prices for the time-restricted use of a lane. I understand that a range needs to recoup their investment and cover the overhead, but when they are already paying for the lights and the employees and the “deep pockets” (i.e., tourists) aren’t there yet, they might as well have a local help pay something to cover the bills.
It seems like Discount Firearms & Ammo understands this concept.
With them, I'm allowed to bring my own firearms and ammo, and even my own targets (although I’m more than happy to pay them for the targets for the reasonable cost of the lane rental). They want me in the door and know that locals are better "repeat customers" than someone from another country.
I did see that some complained about the “curb-appeal” and say it’s a “sketchy neighborhood” – but it is really just an industrial area where large warehouse space is not as expensive. Yes, it doesn't have as much neon, stucco, and bright colors as places on the Strip. As for myself, I’m more interested in getting the proper training than how my surroundings may look to my followers.
Also, since I’m probably carrying a bag of my preferred form of “personal and home defense” and the other patrons are probably well protected themselves, "sketchy" it isn’t a concern.
Regarding workers being “rude” or “unhelpful” – I don’t think that is the case with Discount Firearms & Ammo. Yes, some personalities are not the typical "retail" salesman. Admittedly, any gun store or range can be intimidating -- just like going into a bike shop, golf store, running stores, or other place that is basically a specialty shop and you are just a "beginner." I've been there but actually felt this store and the employees were better than many of the other places in town.
For those who may wonder what to expect going into any gun store or range: I've found that gun stores and ranges have their own etiquette and “culture” – remember their customers tend to be people who either don’t like to be pestered or the customer is going into the store with a clear objective and will make that objective quickly known.
Overall, very pleased and will be...
Read moreThis review should be a one star but is five stars is directed only towards Jared and his corner team not the gunsmith Jason.I am a regular here and was having issues with my build. I been here daily trying to work the kinks out of my build
I first was approaching the gunsmith multiple times for help and servicing I wanted to drop my gun off to discount to be worked on until I meant the gunsmith. He has the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced and very rude and dismissive. I am very well experienced in building firearms and this current build was just giving me a lot of issues I went through everything step by step and was 1000% sure I had a gas leak and under gassed the gunsmith didn’t seem to understand and suggested things that made no sense and didn’t even offer taking the firearm for servicing instead he was saying the platform would never work because barrel is 5” which is ridiculous and absurd to say. He acted like he knew what he was talking about and honestly very unknowledgeable In something that was a simple fix.I approached him yesterday because I wanted to have my gun serviced by the gunsmith instead because of his ways I decided to figure it out myself in the range by working out the kinks.
Before leaving range I was convinced it was a gas leak as the residue was building up on barrel around gas system you could literally see the residue. At that point I wanted to have it serviced and worked on.I approached Jason one last time to show him and was ready to have my firearm serviced.I was correct about the gas system instead he looked at it and said it was normal nothing was wrong it’s the 5”barrel which was completely incorrect and clear as day as you could see gas residue. I was having ejection issues where casing would halfway extract but never eject as time went along the bcg wouldn’t move at all after being fired which was clear it was a gas system issue not barrel length and gas leakage as symptoms progressed.
THIS PART IS DIRECTED TOWARDS JARED
Before leaving I wanted to ask someone else to assure I was correct about issue. I meant Jared for first time and explained my issues and it took him 10 seconds to assure me I was correct about gas issue. He seen right away almost instantly what my issue was and it was my gas block sliding and coming out of alignment and at that point it wasn’t even on the port. Within 10 mins Jared had my firearm up and running firing and ejecting as it was supposed to. Jared was so kind and caring about my issues and helped me get it working and functional. His alertness and concern for the customers is amazing he didn’t need to help , he choose to help me out of his kindness and gun community camaraderie . Jared represents Discount firearms well and his staff in corner near check-in are amazing and very good with customers. More staff need to be like Jared and his team because of Jared discount received a 5 star review and I am forever Grateful for him and...
