The place is very small or at least you are limited on the immense amount of knowledge and data you can learn about. It’s like a small little store for the visitor room.

However, apart from the small gift shop or little visitor area. You will see a 3D design of all the underground mining and tunnels that exist underneath you. It’s incredible to believe that all that is underneath your feet and there’s not much information about it. Quit been stingy and share the knowledge Sanford! Share more about the mining history, about the findings, about the development that has beeb done.

We know and understand you got some good researching going on under our feet and probably needs special security clearance for that, but it’ll be nice to at least put some more history in display. Traveling thousands of miles just to go there and to be disappointed by the lack of history in display. To whoever is in charge, I hope you share or display more history about the mining and how the mining became to be. It’s the only reason I traveled there for. Other than that , I could’ve just googled the history and avoided that place if I had known about the lack of...

Read between the lines and look for what is NOT said. This is a non-reclaimed mine that the company gave to the state to keep from paying reclamation costs. The mine owners undermined the town and other people's property without ramifications, stuffing their pockets with gold money - in essence actually taking gold from other property owners and town businesses which then collapsed due to unsafe and unlawful mining. The main owner died so his wife decided to take care of the employees and families with some of the millions she inherited. This is the example of big business destroying the land, disregarding the ecosystem and geography of the area. Other mine owners were pushed out so the main one could get excessively wealthy. Now the government is sinking our tax money into the mine for numerous research projects. Tax payers will be paying for the reclamation and all expenses now. The info in the museum fails to disclose the number of deaths, the theft of land, and the destruction caused. This is a disgrace of a place to advertise as a 'great...

I had an incredible experience visiting the Sanford Underground Research Facility! From start to finish, the entire visit was fascinating and educational. The depth (literally and figuratively) of the research being conducted here is truly world-class—from the search for dark matter to studies in geology and biology. It’s amazing to see such groundbreaking science happening right here in South Dakota.

What really stood out, though, was the staff. Every person I interacted with was exceptionally friendly, helpful, and passionate about what they do. Whether it was answering questions, explaining complex concepts in an easy-to-understand way, or simply making sure everyone felt welcome, the team made the experience even more memorable.

If you’re at all curious about science, the universe, or just love learning new things, a visit to SURF is a must. Highly recommend it to anyone traveling through the Black...

I love this place. I am a huge fan of the Homestake Mine. I love the viewing area and the indoor displays about the mine. The hanging display of the Homestake Mine tunnels and area really puts into perspective how large and important this mine was to America. The staff are always welcoming, friendly and helpful and I always find something to add to my personal Homestake collection from the gift shop. Being a miner myself, I really appreciate "THE MINER'S LEGEND" which is told on a bronze plaque on one of the large boulders outside. I love just staring into the open pit from the viewing area and imagine what the early days of the mine was like. The large viewing windows are complimented with a cross section of the geology, formation and workings. Not to mention all the science stuff as well! My brother loves that part! Definitely worth a visit and I keep returning!

Gives a great history of the town of Lead and the homestake mining corporation, as well as some of the recent science activities going on in the mine. The center has a great view of the open cut, which is a giant hole, similar in size to the town itself. My favorite exhibit is a model of the mine, which shows all of the individual layers along with the shafts that go down to each level. The other great thing about the visitors center is the staff. The woman we talked with was extremely knowledgeable about the mine and all of the activities going on there. There is also the LUX detector, the real detector, cut open so you can see the internals. It's a great display of the technology.
