What a strange place. We booked it because of the decent price and good ratings, but I don't know how people can possibly like this hotel.|It started with a weird check-in. There is no front desk, so you have to wait outside the door until someone arrives from the street.|Our room was the Engineer's Office. The very high ceiling looks nice at first glance, but turns out to make it difficult to heat. We were there in autumn and we had to use the extra electric heater all night; still it wasn't really warm. The old radiator is very noisy, hissing all the time.|The room was located at the side/rear of the hotel, and there was a lot of noise outside all night. At 2 in the morning I woke up because people were screaming on the street, it sounded like they would kill each other. Very creepy because I suspect there's no-one at the hotel except for the guests. There is no front desk after all. So I didn't feel safe.|BTW the windows of our room were so dirty we could hardly look out.|There were lots of flies inside, getting on our nerves when we tried to sleep. One fly crashed onto my pillow, obviously dead. Disgusting. The guy who let us in said we could call him if we needed him to remove any insects, but how would he possibly do that with ceilings that high?|Breakfast was a tiny table full of UPFs with some fresh fruit. We had to take the food to our room because there is only one table and this was occupied by a bunch of chatting OAPs who had finished their meal but wouldn't leave to let others sit there.|I had been looking forward to our stay because I really like old buildings and this one certainly has its charms, but it is not suited as a hotel. We wouldn't stay...

Literally the best hospitality we have EVER received. The owner Mark, and the housekeeper / general helper extraordinaire Sue, were absolutely fantastic hosts and went above and beyond to help us out during our stay. We ended up staying a few days longer than planned due to some unexpected car trouble, and we could not have asked for more.

The rooms (we ended up staying in 3 total) were all fantastic: super comfy beds, high ceilings, cool historic feeling, and exceptionally clean. The Judge's Chamber was our favorite, as it was a bit larger and had a lot of light and windows facing main street with some cool views toward the old Homestake Mining cut (awesome attraction walking distance down the street). Pictures below taken from across the street of the cut.

The location was convenient, just a short 3 mile-ish ride to Deadwood (or a quick $10 cab ride back if you've been drinking). Unless you're staying literally on Old Main Street in Deadwood, most places "in" Deadwood are still too far to walk to the main area. Honestly, staying at the Town Hall Inn in Lead made more sense since you'd have to use a vehicle anyway. We were able to sleep soundly in an exceptionally comfortable and clean room, leaving the crazy bar noise behind us at night.

If you're even considering staying here, just book it - you will...

A TripAdvisor Member “Nostalgic Feeling of Olde Times in this Historic Inn” 5 of 5 stars Pending review

Last week we stayed 3 nights in the Historic Town Hall Inn in Lead, South Dakota. We highly recommend this quaint Inn as it has a fun feeling of history yet with the comforts we've come to expect in today's times. Our room, the Municipal Judges Chambers, is on the 2nd floor. It quickly became our home away from home. One of many special aspects of this room is the tall and numerous windows allowing sunlight to pour in. There are shade darkening curtains you can adjust for as much or as little natural light as you want. Our host greeted us with a relaxed warmth. We enjoyed visiting with our hosts and they gladly shared some of the history of Lead and the area. Staying here, especially for more than 1 night, gives you a feel for the past and present of the town of Lead. Using this inn as our base we traveled to many cities and area attractions including- Crazy Horse Monument, Mount Rushmore, Rapid City, antique stores, Evans Plunge (Hot Springs) and Deadwood . We loved the scenery as we drove. We hope you get a chance to experience this special place! Oh, if you do go, ask them about the vision and hope they have for an attraction in Lead. It's exciting!...

What an absolute gem. Very happy that I didn't book in Deadwood which looks like fun but also very touristy. The Town Hall Inn is a historical gem with each bedroom one of the rooms of the old town hall and still with the name of the room above the door. The room was really well appointed and with huge ceilings. I was in the Deliberation room and it was lovely to think of all the town discussions that took place in the room. The owners are new and are clearly dedicated to making the Inn as good as it can be. The provision of plugs and USB chargers by the bed are a perfect example. There is a bar is the basement (which used to be the police cells) with micro brewery beers that are worth visiting the Inn for on their own merit. The bartender Chris is a delight and she had that great ability to bring parties together in the bar so that you make new friends. I am traveling across the US from coast to coast and this has been one of the highlights of my trip.

Fantastic historic lodgings in impeccable condition. Handy to Historic Deadwood and a party scene. Lead is quieter so you have a choice to party or not party. Themed rooms based on the fact this was a former municipal building in days long gone. The owner/operators were helpful and kind. On my second stay, I chose a second floor room at the back of the building. So some advice; The staircase to the second floor is long and fairly steep and there is no elevator, so if you can't do stairs it will be hard to make this work. My choosing of the back of the hotel was based on the number of loud motorcycles and cars that sped by the building until the wee hours of the morning. Avoid that by booking in the back. If you follow this advice, you will be happy and the "Town Hall Inn" is highly recommended.
