What a strange place. We booked it because of the decent price and good ratings, but I don't know how people can possibly like this hotel.|It started with a weird check-in. There is no front desk, so you have to wait outside the door until someone arrives from the street.|Our room was the Engineer's Office. The very high ceiling looks nice at first glance, but turns out to make it difficult to heat. We were there in autumn and we had to use the extra electric heater all night; still it wasn't really warm. The old radiator is very noisy, hissing all the time.|The room was located at the side/rear of the hotel, and there was a lot of noise outside all night. At 2 in the morning I woke up because people were screaming on the street, it sounded like they would kill each other. Very creepy because I suspect there's no-one at the hotel except for the guests. There is no front desk after all. So I didn't feel safe.|BTW the windows of our room were so dirty we could hardly look out.|There were lots of flies inside, getting on our nerves when we tried to sleep. One fly crashed onto my pillow, obviously dead. Disgusting. The guy who let us in said we could call him if we needed him to remove any insects, but how would he possibly do that with ceilings that high?|Breakfast was a tiny table full of UPFs with some fresh fruit. We had to take the food to our room because there is only one table and this was occupied by a bunch of chatting OAPs who had finished their meal but wouldn't leave to let others sit there.|I had been looking forward to our stay because I really like old buildings and this one certainly has its charms, but it is not suited as a hotel. We wouldn't stay...
Read moreLiterally the best hospitality we have EVER received. The owner Mark, and the housekeeper / general helper extraordinaire Sue, were absolutely fantastic hosts and went above and beyond to help us out during our stay. We ended up staying a few days longer than planned due to some unexpected car trouble, and we could not have asked for more.
The rooms (we ended up staying in 3 total) were all fantastic: super comfy beds, high ceilings, cool historic feeling, and exceptionally clean. The Judge's Chamber was our favorite, as it was a bit larger and had a lot of light and windows facing main street with some cool views toward the old Homestake Mining cut (awesome attraction walking distance down the street). Pictures below taken from across the street of the cut.
The location was convenient, just a short 3 mile-ish ride to Deadwood (or a quick $10 cab ride back if you've been drinking). Unless you're staying literally on Old Main Street in Deadwood, most places "in" Deadwood are still too far to walk to the main area. Honestly, staying at the Town Hall Inn in Lead made more sense since you'd have to use a vehicle anyway. We were able to sleep soundly in an exceptionally comfortable and clean room, leaving the crazy bar noise behind us at night.
If you're even considering staying here, just book it - you will...

Last week we stayed 3 nights in the Historic Town Hall Inn in Lead, South Dakota. We highly recommend this quaint Inn as it has a fun feeling of history yet with the comforts we've come to expect in today's times. Our room, the Municipal Judges Chambers, is on the 2nd floor. It quickly became our home away from home. One of many special aspects of this room is the tall and numerous windows allowing sunlight to pour in. There are shade darkening curtains you can adjust for as much or as little natural light as you want. Our host greeted us with a relaxed warmth. We enjoyed visiting with our hosts and they gladly shared some of the history of Lead and the area. Staying here, especially for more than 1 night, gives you a feel for the past and present of the town of Lead. Using this inn as our base we traveled to many cities and area attractions including- Crazy Horse Monument, Mount Rushmore, Rapid City, antique stores, Evans Plunge (Hot Springs) and Deadwood . We loved the scenery as we drove. We hope you get a chance to experience this special place! Oh, if you do go, ask them about the vision and hope they have for an attraction in Lead. It's exciting!...
