Our first outing at the El Portal Theater last night was a good one. My Mother was in a wheelchair, so I asked in advance how I would go about getting her inside as seating went by tiers. Theater staff and Starkid Productions said to arrive early, let someone at the box office know, and we would be filed in with the first smaller group. It was a little chaotic when we got there--we were in line around 6:00 p.m. an hour before seating. I initially didn't see anyone in the designated box office, and started to get a bit nervous. However, around 6:30 when I went back up to the front, I saw staff members and was able to tell them. Out of the 300 plus people, she was the only one in a chair, and they were extremely accommodating to us. They held open doors, gave us an accessible way to enter and seat ourselves in the main-stage auditorium, and made sure Mom was able to see when two other patrons sat in front of her. They also ensured the accessible restroom was cleared for people who needed it like she did (there was even a sign on the door indicating this in legible font). There was a line when we got there at intermission, which was quickly thinned out when they noticed all of the able bodied people were not going upstairs to the other restrooms. I'd like to give a very special shout out to Brad who went above and beyond to ensure she had a good experience. Having to depend on that chair has been very difficult, she's been through so much the past five years, and seeing her smile and have a good time last night for the first time in a while...you have no idea how much it meant to me, really--Thank you so much. And huge standing ovation and thank you to the other staff members who ensured she made it inside early to be able to have a space. We had never done this with a wheelchair before, and without you we would have had no idea what to do. And to our heroes of the night: thank you, Starkid Productions--it truly was an evening that shimmered, burned, and shined as bright as...
Read moreGreat time at the comedy sports competition. This theater has at least 2 actual theaters within it. The main stage and a side room which has the comedy sports competition. I parked at the North Hollywood Red Line station which is a block north. Parking costs $3 and can be paid for with your TAP card. Taking the Metro to this station is a great way to get to this theater. You check in at their desk and pick your seat. The theater holds about 60 people is a semicircle about the central playing court. .They have a little snack bar with chips, candy, soda, beer and wine. The main theater has a larger snack bar with more options so check it out as well. The show is just under 2 hours long with a 10 min intermission. Really funny with all the jokes being clean and nothing offensive is allowed. There was a bus load of high school students from Canada there with us and they loved.it. Will be...
Read moreNOHO area, fun historic building. The sound system was amazing for such a small, dare I say outdated building. The Knitting Factory, small concert venue, is right across the street. Went for a pole fitness competition supporting my daughter's instructor Lauren at Black Velvet Pole in Chino Hills! These people are amazing! I believe there is a video on YouTube. The pictures are of people cleaning the poles. All kinds of food, dining, within a short drive, just map the area and search. Ramen...
