This used to be one of the top supermarket chains in the country. Before Mr Wegman passed away, I was often grateful for how fortunate I felt to have such an excellent supermarket to shop at. The variety was terrific. The international section was a never-ending source of wonder. I just loved Wegmans. The employees always looked happy and full of life. The prices were always on the expensive side, but I didn't have a problem with that because of how incredibly well-run the company was.
But my oh my, how far we have fallen. This company is now following the leadership of the corporatocracists, having more and more influence worldwide. The worldview of these globalists is so antithetical to the American way of life. And whether it's direct or indirect, Wegmans is now following suit. It's as if the heirs of the company that Mr. Wegman built arrogantly wanted to make their mark on the world.
The phrase "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" has persistence for a reason. They took something extraordinary and devolved it into a soulless, chaotic mess. I say chaotic because this store has no idea what it is. Every once in a while, they seem to offer things dabbling in the wholesale Club market. But in furtherance of the chaos, those things appear and disappear randomly. And they now push their own brand to the point of eliminating national brands, apparently seeing them as competition. Their produce is very low quality. If you think that's false, try getting produce from ShopRite or Giant for a while.
In the cold cuts section, they keep eliminating my favorites. I used to be able to buy Gruyere cheese there, but now it's gone. What self-respecting Deli would not have either Gruyere or Emmentaller available for slicing? Yes, you can get both in the gourmet cheese section, but who wants to pay $20 a pound?
Their meat is outrageously overpriced and always has been. Even when Mr Wegman was alive, their meat was substantially more expensive than the other supermarkets.
Sadly, the entire Spirit of this place has been gutted since he passed away. The choices and selection keep diminishing while the prices above inflation keep increasing. You get less and less here all the time.
Mr. Wegman came from a generation of Americans that valued more than just money. And while he amassed a fortune for himself, and it was well deserved as far as I'm concerned, he also gave much back in quality and selection to his customers.
This place has gone the way of so many American companies. Or at least they used to be American. It's just sad. I only come here when it's convenient for me as I only live 10 minutes away. But when I do my actual shopping, my preference by far and away it's ShopRite. They still have tremendous variety, and their prices are fair,...
Read moreI really enjoy Wegman's (please see my review of the Dickson City location), so when presented with the opportunity to join some good friends at this location for lunch, I was happy to take up the opportunity.
Superficially, I will say that this location has a bit of an 18th century, austere, Protestant facade with an unnecessary and imposing steeple atop of the body of the grocery store. The interior, however, is vibrant, modern, and busy with all the features you would expect of any grocery store that appeals to upper middle class WASPs. Of course, we spent most of our time in the cafe area, where the hot food and cold food section boasted an impressive array of options, including a well-developed variety of Asian foods.
However, one of my friends and I settled on getting some of the pizza. Between the two of us, we sampled most of their selection, and I found that the prices and quality were very agreeable. We got the lunch deal, which included a fountain drink, dispensed by one of those new age, touchscreen soda dispensers which are very fun to use.
One of the most notable aspects of our visit was how progressive the staff seemed to be at this location. While my friend and I ordered, it appeared that our server at the pizza counter thought we were a same-sex couple. Ha! Obviously, if you have read any of my past reviews, you would see that I reference an (ex) GIRLfriend multiple times and have gone to restaurants with many other WOMEN on dates. That being said, I appreciate and admire that the staff were ready to provide service to a potentially gay couple with the same dutifulness and respect as anyone else!
Otherwise, the seating for the cafe area was pretty comfortable and generous, albeit positioned a little too far away to enjoy the soda dispenser easily, which is closer to the food ordering area and separated by an entire alcoholic beverages section.
I would say that the combination of variety for any possible mood for food, the fair prices, the tolerant staff, and the solid food quality made for a good performance from yet another Wegman's...
Read moreIronically, yesterday morning, I had to stop at the grocery store because I forgot to place an additional catering order. To my surprise, it was a very seemingly smooth transaction. But through small talk and the ability to connect. The staff at the Meals 2GO department were just so sweet. Not in a gooey, almost fake sweet. It was a soft, I am here, I am listening to you type of sweet experience that you don’t always expect. I think the two young ladies assisting me could read from my body language, that life was a bit out of sorts. We proceeded with my orders and finalized adding more items for my pick up. But before I leave the counter, she hands me a bouquet of flowers and tells me; things will get better. I looked at her and without even asking her for permission; I hugged her and thanked her. I am a firm believer that life is small segments of extraordinary moments. That was one for me! She has no clue the luggage that I am carrying, how I was feeling, she simply saw me. Displayed empathy both physically and emotionally. They impacted my day and this reminded me; that not everyone is sour and out to point fingers at you. Regardless of appearance or cultural differences. There are people like her everywhere. Wegmans employs people who genuinely care, who aren’t trying to be hypocrites with empty smiles. My day took a turn after I walked out of those sliding doors. She changed my view not only on the day, but the week and perhaps years to come. So thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your hiring team clearly does a great job vetting the right people. I will always be a Wegmans loyal customer. They...
