When I met Nolan Nitschke several years ago, my assumption was that there were a few Eastern Sierra photographers that all fit neatly into the same category: people for whom photography was a by product of their propensity for alpinism and climbing. Nolan was and is not that. He is an artist first and foremost. Born and raised in the Owens Valley, this young man grew up under the shadow of the Sierra Nevada mountains and seems to be connected to this place at his core. Autodidactic by nature, conveying a sense of place seems to be as natural as breathing for Nolan. Every time I speak to him he inspires me with his enthusiasm for originality. His images of the landscape are as fresh and original as they are breathtaking. It's not that Nolan has a few pretty pictures. The gallery is a storied look at the entire Sierra Nevada Range. Viewing Nolans work is like listening to a classical composition - A single image can be a profoundly beautiful, but taken as a whole, Nolans body of work will take you on a journey through the seasons leaving you completely satisfied, and like any other brilliant artist, leaving you wondering what he will...
Read moreThe grand reopening of Sierra Light Gallery in Mammoth Lakes should be celebrated from the highest peaks and passes in the Eastern Sierra. This stunning 3,000 square foot space offers visitors some of the most iconic images ever captured of the wilderness and landscape that stretches from Mt. Whitney north to Yosemite and beyond. It is home to photographer Nolan Nitschke's work, a collection of photos so good the Smithsonian Museum has included his work three times in national exhibitions. Not since the late, great photographer Galen Rowell's gallery closed in Bishop several years ago, has this corner of California had a destination that both the casual and core outdoor enthusiast can go to visually absorb the best of the Eastern Sierra. If you are within 50 miles of Mammoth, make Sierra Light Galley a must stop. Nolan designed and decorated the gallery, and the images are mesmerizing. Yes, I'm bias, and a friend, and a lucky owner of several of his prized photos. Still, I would not lead you astray. Sierra Light Gallery is better than any apres-ski moment. It is the real deal. Five...
Read moreWe were finally able to get our hands on a piece from the sierra light gallery!! We stopped in last year and absolutely fell in love with Nitschke’s work. His ability to capture such large scenes, yet somehow still catch all the little details, is quite a gift. The photos are crystal clear with rich, vibrant colors…it’s almost like you’re looking out the window at the scene itself. If you’re looking to decorate your walls, look no further. A piece from Nitschke will elevate your space tremendously. Not to mention that when you purchase his work, you are supporting his ability to get out there and capture more amazing images! Thank you for capturing the beauty the world has to...
