Really disappointed to have to write such a poor review of this hostel. In general, I love getting to stay in hostels where they exist in the US, but in this case, save yourself the trouble and find a hotel in Mammoth Lakes instead. I am used to someone being at a front desk on arrival, but no one was here when we showed up (not at any crazy time either, a bit before 5pm) and an envelope with our keys was left pinned to a board. No real issue there. Our party of 6 got to our room of 6 beds, to find someone had left all of their gear still on one of the beds. Turns out the hostel had double-booked the same bed. After a few tries of calling, we were able to get keys to another room to get the correct number of beds, but had no sheets or pillow for the new bed. Called the hostel's phone number again, and was told to "pick the lock" to the storage closet to get sheets. Still no in-person interaction with whoever is supposed to be working here, and no pillow either. Was able to use a camp pillow I brought with me, but after paying $64 per person for a single night here, I would sure expect a open bed with clean sheets and a pillow as the bare minimum. Not to mention other minor things around the hostel, such as absolutely no towels (hand or shower) in the kitchen or either men's or women's bathrooms, unless you count the tackily framed one, and splintering bunk beds that look ready to fall down. Seems like whoever runs this place simply doesn't care. As I mentioned at the start, I love hostels and wish I could recommend this one, but unfortunately in this case, get more out of your money and stay at any other place besides here in...
Read moreHere's what I care about when staying at a hostel: price, hot/clean shower, strong wifi, added bonuses would be good communal sitatution/kitchen/etc.||||At Moderne Hostel:||Showers get hot & quick, and aren't grimy and dirty (I showered without flip flops).||Wifi is easy and very fast.||Kitchen is nice, and well stocked with what you need.||Ample parking, and staff even politely lent me a snow brush to clean my car - multiple times. Saved me from buying one (since I live in LA).||||Location: its right next to Red Line stop #16, so you can get to Main Lodge easily. And its even walkable to The Village aka the gondola to Canyon Lodge. 76 gas station right across the street. Restaurants on Old Mammoth Rd etc are a short Uber away, or there's always people here who are looking to split Domino's delivery orders, etc.||||Bed is sufficient; you're not paying for the presidential suite at the Westin here. Some of the other reviewers complaining about bed or pillow comfort honestly must have never stayed at a hostel before. The per night cost for a bed is about 2 main course meals at theMammoth canteens!!||Summary on bed: I slept fine.||||Communal room has a flat screen TV with ESPN and plenty of channels (that's rare...
Read moreThis is not the worst hostel I have stayed at. The linens were clean. It was safe. The shower had ample hot water. There was sufficient parking. It was not filthy. But the common areas were not what I would consider clean. It looked like it had been a long time since the lower bathroom sink had been scrubbed. It looked like the bath mats had never been laundered. 2 of 3 refillable complimentary shampoo/conditioner/bodywash dispensers were empty when I stayed there. I wonder if the furniture or towel bin ever have been dusted. The kitchen has a pot but, oddly, no stove top or oven. It has silverware, glasses, and a couple plates but no bowls. The leather furniture looks like it has seen better decades. Half of the toilets in the shared men's bathroom have no stalls. The cleanliness resembles an average frat house. There is nothing modern about this dated hostel. I would suggest the management consider an induction stove top, daily scrubbing of the bathrooms, and monthly dusting. If you are looking for the cheapest place in Mammoth, this is it. But if you can afford to splurge at a hotel room and have reasonably high cleanliness standards, the cost of prevailing hotel rooms in town may just...
