I love this dog park! I have a new puppy who needed a lot of exercise because she is a hound. I couldn’t walk with her initially because she was not trained on a leash, or as anything else. The park was a godsend!
The park is big enough for dogs to have a good run but small enough that you could spot your dog and know that they’re safe. The park is fully fenced, which some other area parks are not.
They have a cool way of showing their supporters with plaques on the fence. Also, there’s a lot of love put into the flowers on the outside of the park.
Almost everyone I’ve met there has been very nice. Of course people are people, a.k.a. not as giving and loving as dogs. Once in a while you find a dud, As you would anywhere.
Overall, I feel like the management of the park is very embedded and focused on improving the park. The only thing I would like more of is if the grass was mowed more often because I like to walk around the perimeter.
I love that there are tools available to refill holes made by diggers, like my Gigi.
Thank you for this beautiful Haven close to downtown in...
Read moreWhen I first brought my rescue dog home from the shelter, he was terrified of most things and people, but he loved other dogs. I searched for dog-friendly locations in my area, and found this park listed among the options. That was over a year ago now and I can wholeheartedly endorse this park as having some of the friendliest human beings and the widest variety of dogs I've come across in my life as a resident of Connecticut. Because of this non-profit, volunteer-based dog park, my sweet rescue dog has started to come out of his shell about humans because he consistently has experiences with them when they're being kind but responsible dog owners. We enjoy this park so much that we've become friends with people and dogs here. I feel lucky it exists, and I support it by attending meetings and events. The involved members of the community of this park are what makes it a real hidden gem. You may not see all of that on a random visit, but if you're a regular member of the park, you may understand what I'm trying to describe. On any given evening, for us, it is a slice of dog...
Read moreI used to visit Candlewoof several times a week with my black lab, Coal, when he was still living. He sadly died of cancer just a day or two after our last visit there.
At the time, Candlewoof had not been listed on Google Maps, but Coal and I loved the place (and the regulars) so much that I submitted it to Google for addition to Google Maps. I included a few photos that I took of the park, but for some unexplainable reason, did not include any dog pictures(?). So, in memory of Coal, I’m retroactively including just a few of Coal (with dog friend) at Candlewoof. Next time you’re there, ask a few of the old-time regulars if they remember him. I bet they will! (Say hello to Tom, if he hasn’t headed south for the winter!)
‘ Probably more dogs than ever there now. It would often top 20 crazy fun-loving dogs at a time, and was always the best time for the dogs and the people who the dogs owned!
It’s great to see that so many have found Candlewoof since then! The park is self-supported, so if you can, I know they would appreciate a small...
