Located across the street from the World Trade Center, FDNY Engine 10/Ladder 10 (known as the Ten House) was the first fire station to respond to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. 🚒 Immediate Response
The Ten House was already in the middle of a shift change on the morning of September 11, 2001, when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower at 8:46 a.m.
Given their proximity, the firefighters immediately saw the unfolding disaster. They were the first fire department units to arrive on the scene and quickly began rescue and evacuation efforts.
Devastating Losses and Damage During the collapse of the towers, the Ten House firehouse suffered significant damage from falling debris.
The building was nearly destroyed and became unusable as a firehouse for a time, though it was later used as a command center and a place for rest and recuperation for rescue and recovery workers.
Tragically, the Ten House lost five members on September 11, including a lieutenant and two firefighters from Ladder 10. The FDNY as a whole lost 343 members that day, the largest loss of first responders in a single event in...
Read moreI travel all over and visit fire departments I enjoy taking to fellow firefighters and taking pictures of the station and rigs. I got to visit a few NYFD station this week and got to speak to a lot of firefighters, but I have never been treated so rudely until I visited the 10 house. I understand you guys probably have a ton of people visiting every day but no excuse for the way I was treated. I walked up to an opened roll up door and asked an engineer if I could take a few pictures he said sure no problem. I was standing in the door way taking a picture when another firefighter came up and rudely yelled at me that I can’t be in here taking pictures. I said I was just told I could and he asked who because you shouldn’t be in here. I pointed at the engineer on the other side of the engine I said sorry and started backing away then he started saying well just take your pictures. I took a couple more and left. I would hope most NYFD knows we want to visit your station to pay respect for you’re brothers that paid the ultimate price on that tragic day and what you guys...
Read moreThough I haven't visited this location since 2004, I want to honor the heroism displayed by FDNY Ladder 10 on September 11th, 2001. In the face of unimaginable danger, these firefighters, like countless others before and since, exemplified courage by entering the North Tower of the World Trade Center without hesitation. Despite the tragic loss of all Ladder 10 members in the tower collapse, their sacrifice and bravery continues to inspire billions. The FDNY, along with firefighters worldwide, embodies the very best in every call they answer, reminiscent of my grandfather's fearless act in Fresno City. His bravery, much like that of the FDNY on 9/11, serves as a testament to the courage and selflessness of firefighters everywhere. Thank to all NYFD. Thank you FDNY Ladder 10. Thank you to all firefighters all across this Earth as you continue to protect its occupants and...
