If I the area, peak in tru fence but for an adventure, stroll E Houston St and check out the many public gardens, some filled with art. Ownership and access to the parK wikipedia: “As a private park, Gramercy Park is held in common by the owners of the 39 surrounding structures, as it has been since December 31, 1831.45] Two keys are allocated to each of the original lots surrounding the park, and the owners may buy keys for a fee, which was originally $10 per key, but as of 2008 was $350, with a $1,000 fee for lost keys,[746] which rises to $2,000 for a second instance.[31] The Medeco locks are changed annually,[32] and any property that does not pay the annual assessment of $7,500 per lot has its key privileges revoked;[31] additionally, the keys are very hard to duplicate.[45] As of 2012, there were 383 keys in circulation, each individually numbered and coded.[31]
Members of the Players Club and the National Arts Club as well as guests of the Gramercy Park Hotel,[47] which has 12 keys,[32] have access, as does Calvary Church and the Brotherhood Synagogue; hotel guests are escorted to the park and picked up later by hotel staff.[31] In addition, the owners of the luxury condominium apartments at 57 Irving Place, completed in 2012, can obtain key access to the park by becoming members of the Players Club, even though the building is located several blocks from the park.[48]
At one time, the park was open to the public on Gramercy Day – which changed yearly, but was often the first Saturday in May. In 2007, the trustees announced that the park would no longer be open for Gramercy Day because it "had turned into a street fair".[49] The park, however, continues to be open to the public on Christmas Eve.[50] Visitors to the park may not at any time drink alcohol, smoke, ride a bicycle, walk a dog, play ball or Frisbee, or feed the birds and squirrels.[31]
In 2001, Aldon James of the National Arts Club that adjoins the park brought about 40 children, mostly minorities, into the park from the nearby Washington Irving High School on Irving Place. The trustee at the time, Sharen Benenson, called police alleging that the children were trespassing.[49] The police refused to take action. Later, a suit was filed against the park's administration in Federal Court.[5153] The suit was settled out of court in 2003. Most of the children settled for $36,000 each, while one received $50,000.[7
In December 2014, it was revealed in The New York Times that 360-degree panoramic pictures of the interior of the park – taken using Photo Sphere, a Google app within Google Street View, by Shawn Christopher from the Pittsburgh area – had been posted to Google Maps. Christopher got access to the park by renting a room through the Airbnb service and using the key to the park which came with the room. The Gramercy Park Block Association – which did not know about the photographs until informed by a Times reporter – did not give Christopher permission to shoot in the park, and he was unaware that photography was generally...
Read moreI love taking long walks through the city on Sundays, wandering aimlessly like I'm Ibn Battuta. Not all those who wander are lost hahahaahahaah.
I am walking west on E 20th St and see the most well kept, beautiful park I have seen in long time. Especially in NYC.
Flowers are BLOOMING a beautiful white-ish pink straight out a Monet painting. Think the Japanese Cherry Blossom that bloom in the spring (yeah I've been to Japan haha smiley face).
Cobblestone streets line the entry and exits, and it is how I imagine the Medici's private grounds would have been if they were influenced by the Japanese.
I took a few laps around the outside of the park, trying to find an entrance but every gate was locked so I was a bit confused. However, I saw people in there so I opened my Yelp app to get some intel.
I saw that this was a private park for residents of the surrounding area only. Now I wanted to get in 100x more.
I thought about jumping the fence, but that just would have been in bad taste.
I began to circle this park like a Hawk circling a small mammal in the desert, waiting for my opportunity to strike.
Jk. I think it's important to respect the exclusivity.
But as two gentleman were walking out, I took a hard first step in and as I thought it would be funny to see how they reacted.
They were a little startled and then laughed in relief when I said I was just messin. I probably shouldn't have done that. Idk, sometimes I just do think for my own entertainment but that may be a selfish endeavor. Sorry fellas.
Would love to actually get in here and post...
Read moreUPDATE: This morning came upon Lou Diamond Phillips, Tom Payne, Aurora Perrineau, Frank Harts and crew filming exterior shots for Fox’s series “Prodigal Son.” Also on scene were the running black ‘70 or so Pontiac Lemans that Lou Diamond Phillips drives on the series along with the body-double car that lacks windows for shooting conversations between Phillips and other cast members in the car. (See photos and video)...Love walking around the periphery of the park, despise that it remains one of, if not the only, private parks in the city. I appreciate the many grand old trees here and the many plantings. Do also love the old architecture surrounding it, at least the homes dating to the 1840s and 1850s. And one never knows what to expect when walking by, as I do daily on my commute to work, as when I saw this set of about 10 classic or vintage American cars from the 1930s and 1940s parked for...
