Is it worth $142 (including taxes and fees) for a Double bed + 1 twin)? It’s the cheapest accommodation we could find in Manhatten on a holiday weekend / sat night. The room we booked was for 3 persons but we had only two occupants which is just right . Might be tight for 3 if you have plenty of luggages.||There is a mini fridge and sink in each room which was convenient . A public area next to reception on 1st floor with free coffee and tea in morning. Also a microwave and water fountain. |So if you’re staying long term, you can save your leftovers in your room’s mini fridge and warm them in the microwave. ||Pro: charming, unique, interesting murals and artistic, great location (lots of restaurants!), hot water in showers, heater kept room very toasty, clean sheets, clean thick newer towels, staff is super nice (Mr Patagonia) and gave a nice welcome. Room is relatively clean, doesn’t smell. ||Con: it’s a hostel at a hotel price. Some rooms are better condition than others and vice versa: ie some rooms are worse. Some of the bathrooms are also slightly better condition because they were upgraded. Bedroom got too hot we had to prop open the window to cool it down. No elevator. ||Suggestion: |1. arrive early you might get a choice of rooms|2. Bring Flipflop (and a plastic bag for your personal stuff) for the shared bathroom|3. Save a few dollars if you book direct. We paid more through Agoda because we didn’t know. |4. Tour the whole hotel walk around every floor! |5. Don’t loose your key - no staff after midnight so you will be locked out! ||We had a room with walls of painted dolls that look like voodoo dolls - especially when the lights go out, their white faces reflect the ambient light - pretty spooky. |We didn’t hear any noise from next door. |We parked on the street - free parking on sat night to Sunday. Other days you have to pay the meter. ||We could have driven to queens and had a nicer hotel for the same price but then we chose location over that. |One night is ok. More only if you ok with the gringiness. It’s very old and could use updates but then, if updated, you probably won’t be paying this price like other places...
Read moreI don't understand how this hotel is so cheap. Staying in it is nothing short of an experience; gives strong Sleep No More vibes, except this one's an actual hotel you get to sleep in.
We stayed at The Heart Chamber, and while the in-room scavenger hunt (!!) seems to be defunct, the decor is both spectacularly unique and not a little creepy. There are little surprising touches absolutely anywhere you look - the attention to detail is astounding. And beyond the room itself, the hallways and common areas all have their own unique styles, all full of magical features and trinkets that create the sense this place could well be haunted, but probably by, like, the coolest ghosts ever.
Of course, beyond the artistic value, it's also just a really nice place from a functional perspective. The room was spacious, the beds comfy, and while they don't provide e.g. body wash and shampoo, the common room does have some useful stuff like a microwave, fridge, and printer. Personally I also just love how the building has such classic NY vibes, with windows overlooking colorful bars you can sit and watch from the fire escape. Do note that there are quite a few stairs to climb, though I reckon the staff might help with luggage if asked.
Perhaps the most surprising part about it all, given the low price, is how great the location is. Granted, 3rd Ave is a bit far East (and the NY subway doesn't make East-West navigation as easy as it should), but it's still right in the center of Manhattan, and no more than a 10 minute walk from all the major lines.
Overall, I'd recommend this experience to any young individuals/couples visiting NY, as long as some creepy paintings and bones here and there won't keep you...
Read moreMy husband and I stayed for a few nights at the beginning of our East Coast to West Coast road trip; the location was great, right near Madison square park and easily a walk to most central tourist spots e.g The Empire State Building, Times Square etc. I absolutely adored the resident hotel cats; one in particular was super sweet and kept coming back to visit us! We stayed in room 14b which was a rainbow theme; it was very quirky - which we knew before we arrived, but I think possibly a little too much for our taste - it was recommended by a friend who stayed last October. The room felt quite cramped, and as we were travelling with lots of luggage for the road trip, it felt like there wasn’t really much room. My husband also got bitten quite badly in the night; we didn’t have windows open or anything, but the furnishings being quite dated we thought may have had something to do with it - perhaps bed bugs of some description? We also had to share a bathroom - I think this was probably the most uncomfortable aspect for me. Again, we knew all of this before we arrived, but the condition of the shared bathroom was a little disappointing. It smelt of urine the entire time we were there, and there was a clump of black hair stuck to the wall the entire stay; I saw it on the first day and thought urgh that must have just happened, but then when no one cleaned it off for the 3 days we were there, it was pretty grim. Overall I enjoyed the arty aspect of the hotel and the location, but even though you are out all day exploring the city, it is still a necessity to look forward to returning to your place to stay for...
