The interior of the structure itself is a exclusive, referral-only restaurant called Bohemian. It was amazing to see a spot where so much art history occurred. Considering the fact that when you look up online places to visit of historical significance in New York City it doesn't show up. This is the definition of an off-the-map place to visit. Most locals know of its existence. I came across it by accident while playing with the map on Google during planning for my trip. I would highly recommend coming at least once to pay tribute to an art icon like Jean-Michel Basquiat. You could easily walk by it without knowing its significance if it weren't fit the small dark brown plague adorned near the front door entrance. The graffiti-tagged exterior wall just enhances the experience of the visit. Just across the street is the Firehouse, Engine Company 33, and Ladder Company 9 which is a gorgeous firehouse built in 1899. I recommend visiting in the early morning as the street is empty and the weather is cool, so you can just stroll and view...
Read moreSuper cool that 57 Great Jones has a plaque to commemorate JMB since he spent 5 years living, painting, and ultimately passed away at this address which was owned by Andy Warhol. The outside has recently had graffiti covered and has been repainted - leading to my one main point of contention with over spray covering the historical plaque almost making it unreadable. My hope is that the commission that placed the plaque revisits to cleanup and perhaps make a larger statement regarding the history here since it's understated and feels a bit forgotten. I understand this is now the site of a hip restaurant and I also hope they'll take great care to preserve the history that remains and ensure that the JMB story here is acknowledged. Thank you for telling the story and keeping the property visually accessible to those of us who...
