My wife and I celebrated our first anniversary in New York City last week and our Walking Food Tour of Hell's Kitchen was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. The key to any good tour, food or otherwise, is the guide and Jonathan was certainly up to the task. Given the dreary weather (it rained steadily that day) and the small size of our group, it would have been easy for Jonathan to rush through our tour, simply hit the highlights and be done with us. In short, he could've phoned it in. On the contrary, Jonathan seemed more than content to wait out the heavier rainfall while going more into greater detail about Hell's Kitchen's history and what, from his perspective, makes its current food scene unique. In between bites at five different locations, Jonathan talked music, broadway and the city in a way that was both informative and entertaining. My wife described Jonathan and his personality perfectly. "That was like meeting a new old friend," she said. I couldn't agree more. Jonathan went above and beyond as he told us of other places to see and try in the city. The suggestions that we followed up on all turned out well as he took the time to ask questions and truly heard our answers. He wasn't merely sharing with us what he liked, he was telling us things he believed we would like based on our conversation and interaction. Would love to take another tour with Jonathan or maybe just hang out with him the next time we are in the city. Good job, brother.
As far as the food was concerned. You definitely get enough to eat. I am not one who expects to like everything on a food tour as the point is to try new things, but all of the food was solid. For us there were two standouts. First, the BBQ at Gyu Kaku, which was excellent and a different kind of dining experience as you helped cook your own food. Second, the Cheeseboat. This was my favorite as we sampled two completely different items and I've been craving both ever since. The cheeseboat prepared table side was amazing, velvety and just cheesy goodness. The soup dumplings were as tasty as they were unique.
This was not our first food tour, but so far it has been our favorite. Hope you all enjoy as much as we did. Thanks, Jonathan and to all the folks who cooked for us and served us. We...
Read moreA group of gals gathered for an amazing trip to NYC, planned and hosted by our dear friend Donna Horkey. Donna booked us a walking food tour in Hell's Kitchen and we were blown away! We had the most outstanding tour guide, Nicky Shapiro, you could ever hope to have, and we are still talking about him! He was so engaging, kind, knowledgeable, and passionate about NYC - such a delight! He explained the history of Hell's kitchen along the way which was wonderful as we experienced so many flavors in Hell's Kitchen!
Our first walking food tour spot as at: Gyu-Kaku where we cooked in front of us and had the premium sirloin, the toro beef, and garlic noodles and vegetables. We were hungry from our journeys from Florida and loved it all!
Our next stop was at a famous cookie bakery, Schmackary's, where we enjoyed huge cookies. A lovely dessert after the Gyu-Kaku!
Next we stopped at a Georgian restaurant where we experienced the making of Kachapuri (the classic cheese boat!) It was fascinating to watch them make it with cheese rising in the process! The taste was incredible!
We continued our journey to a meatball shop. We were served the classic meatball and sauce, followed by buffalo chicken balls, and caesar roasted cauliflower. So yummy! Not that we were still hungry, but loved tasting those amazing flavors!
And then onto our final stop, where we walked into the Kashkaval Garden! They served us mezze plate with spreads like tzatziki and babaganoush, pita breads, beet and carrot salads, and hummus. We loved it!
Nicky was extremely helpful along the way and taught us so much about Hell's kitchen! That night we went to see the show Hell's Kitchen which brought everything Nicky shared to life! This was an outstanding walking food tour and I highly recommend you book it with Nicky. We all do! It was our first experience arriving in NYC and set the tone for a phenomenal trip. Thank you Nicky for being so incredible. We will book you again and share our incredible experience whenever we can!
With sincere gratitude and appreciation, Terry, Donna, Leslie,...
Read more5 stars is honestly not enough!!! We’ve been to New York many times but this was by far our best trip yet. We are from canada and I wanted to surprised my fiancé to a New York trip. They did not have space available for the day we needed as they had a school field trip that day and so I called to ask if we could still come. Not only did Alex create a new tour for us but we got lucky with a private tour with the amazing Annabel. By far our best time there, and that’s all thanks to the phenomenal Annabel! She was so informative and helpful. My partner has a history major and was still stunned by the amount of information we received during our tour. We learned so much and laughed even more. She was honestly there highlight of our trip. Not only can you see how passionate she was about history but her love for people was also endearing. She even showed us great spots to eat and visit. We had plans to go see Hamilton so she gave us so more insight on his history that helped us understand a lot more when we saw the play as we had an in-depth conversation. My partner can’t stop talking about this tour. It truly made his birthday trip one to remember! Thank you Alex and the amazing Annabel for an incredible and unforgettable experience!
If I could recommend this to everyone I would (and have) definitely a must do while in New York. We will definitely keep in touch and do this again on our next trip to New York.
We love New...
