Mothership NYC is the kind of place I should have been hanging out with Nicolas Winding Refn in 1985. I'm older and wiser now, so I'm the person who brought and shared mosquito repellent.
It's a "combined live-work space and presentation arena for international artists across multiple disciplines". I came for a BYOB music event with Hundred Hounds. It was my birthday week and I was determined to have champagne on ice. Two days worth of ice cube making and it was a success! Ice cold bubbly on a balmy summer's day with the Hounds, 2 DJs and a light show. On my Top 10 list of nights-out for sure.
The artwork inside the residence made me wish I had Patron-level kind of money to drop. There were quite a few pieces by the founder Sol Kjøk that I was really smitten with. I'm name dropping one Danish director and a Norwegian artist... add my fascination with Scandinavian furniture, I have a bit of a thing going on.
Given the location, not too far from the G and not too close to residential buildings, you can experience the roof deck entertainment space to its fullest. There were a few plastic chairs about, but the best view was from the rooftop ledge. Full Manhattan views to the West, the lovingly lit "Shit Tits" sewage treatment plant of Greenpoint to the East. The coolest, raw, rooftop venue reminiscent of my beloved old gritty NYC. I am looking forward to...
Read moreIf Mothership NYC could be resumed in a word, it would be "warmth". As an Artist in Residency, even through rigorous winter I would wake up everyday in a warmth atmosphere, feeling joy to be in such a creative community. I felt encouraged to go beyond my limits, to expand my way of thinking, to flourish my work. To grow. Surrounded by the most considerate people, for the three months I've spent living there I grew impressively. Sol, our captain and outstanding visual artist, has the natural ability to bound people: she's a great host, considerate, respectful, and kind. One of the best human beings I've known this far. She made me blend right in with the rest of the crew, amazing artists which now I carry as great friends. While living on the ship I developed a project on a monologue of my own, which I had the space to put it on stage in one of the many monthly saloons Mothership NYC promotes. During my stay I've had many opportunities to collaborate with other artist's works, I've got to know many interesting and caring people among artist dinners, saloons, open studios… As should be clear from the above, I strongly recommend this place. I'll be forever grateful for what I've lived in this ship. Until next...
Read moreIn 2023-2024 I stayed at the Mothership over the course of four months. I first came in November 2023 and extended my stay, then returned once more! Mothership became my New York home in between my other travels and residencies on the East Coast. Greenpoint is my favourite neighbourhood in Brooklyn: it's the location of my favourite NYC gallery Faurschou, it's an artist hub with plenty of coffee shops and an exciting food and vintage scene right on the East River. Highly recommend international artists, such as myself, that want to experience New York the way locals do. The Mothership itself sails on the high seas of international community and exchange. During my time at the residency I met wonderful artists from all over the world – Sol has an impressive network of sailors! Many interesting and inspiring conversations and ideas for collaboration were cultivated during my stay. Last but definitely not least, Captain Sol is a fantastic residency host! Her positivity, kindness and can-do spirit makes you feel so very welcome and resonates through the community. She even helped me arrange a solo pop-up exhibition during my time in New York. Thank you for having me, I’ll...
