“Top Hat and Tux Optional”
Ah the ballet! The NYC Ballet based in the David H. Koch theatre has a fairly storied history and one of the most expansive repertoires around the world. You can order tickets for pickup off their website ranging from affordable to sporting event affordable ($50 - $200) but if you chance getting one at the window and qualify for discounts (e.g. curious and cultural student) they can be significantly cheaper. The line at both will call and purchase is fairly crazy so give yourself 20 minutes to get through if you are approaching curtain.
The theatre is clean, simple yet GORGEOUS, comfortable, and has restroom on every floor: ladies to the left, scrubs to the right. You can dress up or dress down; there is no enforced dress code and the ushers are very approachable. Fourth ring is the highest seating area and you can see all the action without the detail. Tippy toes pounding the ground? Check! Graceful leaps into the air? Check! The extra advantage is that you can see the entire flow of the dance, a view you just can’t get in the orchestra (which leans towards the more expensive).
We checked out the third ring to compare the view: the difference is eye popping! What I would recommend is that if it’s a special show they are doing, spring for third ring. If Jerry Springer or ballet are your choices that night, go for fourth ring and save the cash. Remember, no pictures inside the theatre, and be sure to clap for the dozen or so bows the hardworking dancers take.
Facilities: 8/10 for easy access to restrooms Pricing: 8/10 for a variety of purchase options and price points Visibility: 10/10 for almost no blind spots Acoustics: 6/10 for “flat sound” on the Fourth Ring Humanity: 7/10 for muscles bulging through tights and an...
Read moreBright lights and beautiful dancers create elegance and glamor at the iconic New York City Ballet. I watched three ballets danced in a two hour performance at the David Koch Theater. The winter 2014 season performance was delightful.
As the house light faded at the start of the performance, I was on the edge of my seat. The first dance, Bal de Couture, seemed to speed by. My date and I ran across the theater lobby just in time to see this performance (Our Taxi driver was having trouble finding the theater). After running in high heels for a few minutes, I think I wanted more energy from the dancers. The second dance, Danse A Grande Vitesse, I enjoyed much more. The pairing of male and female ballerinas gave excitement to this dance. The Orchestra was perfect. Every instrument seemed to be in sync with the movement of the dancers bodies.
The Four Seasons, the finale of the three ballets, did not disappoint. In one of our nation’s worst winters, this ballet seemed very appropriate. The story line was easy to follow. There was even a little humor involved, a nice touch to this colorful ballet. The costumes were amazing. Bold red costume colors represented fall, sunny yellow for summer and cool colors for spring and winter. There was a progressive build with each dance that made the final performance exactly what it should be, breathtaking. Overall I give this ballet, four out of four stars. I will definitely return to see more from the wonderful team of dancers at the New York...
Read moreThe ballet itself was beautiful, I only fault them for not effectively communicating covid guidelines for children under the age of 12 who purchased their tickets before the vaccine was available. Our family was turned away at the door the day of our showing because it was squeaked into a email that was otherwise not important, and we completely missed the message about the new requirement that my son needed to get a negative test within 72 hours of the ballet.
We were very fortunate that they were willing to make arrangements for us to be at a showing the next day, but our seats had to be changed due to this arrangement, and we had to spend an extra day in New York, running around to find a rapid test sight, to make it happen, which was almost 400 extra dollars, plus the extra days worth of parking and eating expenses.
I think it would be important for the ballet to make sure that they are getting the information out in a more direct and effective way, so that there will not be these issues. I was one of many families with crying children that day because they did not know or expect the requirement to enter. Perhaps instead of an indirect email, an automated call or at least an email with a bold attention "Ticketholders under 12, covid requirements" so the email won't be unread, as many were
Again, the ballet itself was remarkable! The company did a beautiful job, and we thoroughly enjoyed...
