Last fall, I reached out to a different driving school and waited weeks before realizing I hadn't heard back, and by then I was assigned a new project at work and couldn't find time for lessons in the winter.
Finally, I did research on more driving schools in the area and I reached out to Super Starz in late July. They got back to me immediately, with speedy and clear communication.
A few weeks, 20 lessons, over 100 miles later, I took my road test this morning and PASSED. I have so much love for the entire team here, including but not limited to Chris, Mervat, and Marilou, as well as the other instructors I had, who all worked hard to turn me from someone who panicked at the mere thought of getting into a car, into a driver calm and confident enough to pass the road test on my first try (I signed up for so many lessons because I knew i would need it-- it took me five lessons to stop panicking at the idea of even getting into the car)
I can see how the strength of this school can be sometimes seen as a weakness because there are so many instructors and some are more reassuring and warm for panicky, anxious new drivers... And some are a bit more blunt about flaws but great in making sure you have enough practice to fix them. But the truth is if you can get the entire team, they are extremely well rounded and the members all complement each other, and help strengthen every part of a student to make sure they have the comfort and confidence to take their test. The instructors were very clear but constructive on how I wasnt (and when I was!) ready to take the road test.
It's also nice to see that they all talk to each other and if there is conflicting guidance being given, which is to be expected, then they communicate to correct it so they are all teaching the same methods, something I saw on at least two occasions.
Today, Marilou took me and two other students to our road test. One had a few lessons with the school and one didn't have any. She made sure all three of us worked on what we all needed to know so we could pass on our first try. She also took the time to calm us down and offer words of encouragement throughout the entire process.
Mohammad was great at being accommodating to my work and personal schedule, and coordinating my road test, and offered clear communication every step of the way.
The work that Super Starz did in just a few weeks with me helped turn me from someone uncomfortable being in a car as a passenger, into a competent, confident new driver
Excited to have this awesome new skill and watch it grow. Thank you,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI had a good experience with this school so I would recommend if you're looking for a driving school. My reasoning is that the pricing is competitive, and the schedule worked along with my personal life. I was able to get a discount which they offer during the winter holidays.
I was able to pass on my first try after taking a 15 course package, and I had no prior knowledge with driving besides being a passenger in a car, and playing video games. Clearly these are not enough experiences but it has helped me develop intuition.
This school has many different instructors and rarely it was consistent with each lesson. Before you let that put you off, I looked at it differently and thought, "well your examiner is going to be someone you never drove with before on the road test. You'll need to get used to having a person next to you giving you directions". Another good perspective to look at it was that all instructor had slight different views of "correct" techniques but the concept was always the same. So it helped me in understanding how to drive, where I was wrong, and what was the middle ground for being a better driver.
For preparing for the driving test, I highly recommend understanding what lanes you're turning in to, and how to quickly identify the signs. The test location in Staten Island had a one lane, with cars going both direction and in this situation which isn't seen in Brooklyn, you need to drive along the curb. I think this was the only issue I had. I also believe you should often be in a car to help understand the dimensions of a car, and understanding spatial perception.
That's really it for all the tips. By the 13-15th lesson I felt ready for the road test. So good luck, and have fun. Driving wasn't so bad after getting...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy experience at Super Starz Auto Driving School was excellent and I'm glad to report that as of today, I finally passed the NYS road test!!
I had failed two road tests previously at a competing driving school (think Llama) and while I am responsible for that, there were issues with their teaching methods and treatment of patrons. That's when I decided to switch to Super Starz and I couldn't be happier with the process and result.
I brought a 10 lesson package and got to experience learning from all four instructors + road test instructor (Ibrahim, Mary-Lou, Miss Mervat, Tasneem, and Said). They were all attentive, answered my questions accurately, put me at ease, and took the time to ensure I knew how to drive. Super Starz even reviews the test site with you so you can become familiar with the route, which other competitors don't bother to do.
If you're retaking the road test, please take this advice into consideration:
If you failed because of "Abrupt or Delayed braking", it likely means you brake late and when you brake, the car jerks back and forth upon stopping. To remedy this, practice pressing the brake gently, release it, then quickly press again. This will minimize the jerking motion of the car when braking.
When pulling out of a parking spot, shoulder check and mirror check several times before driving out. If you make a mistake or worry about something you did, don't tell the DMV examiner, just fix it and move on.
Driving lessons aren't your only resource. Watching driving videos on Youtube helped clarify and improve my driving skills. You can even find videos on your test site and the different routes the examiners may take.
Best of luck to you!! YOU ARE CAPABLE...
