racist classist elitist condescending judgmental - all things you might’ve come to expect of a Manhattan gallery, but it wasn’t til last night they actually happened to us.
the cold words of “we’re reserving this last bottle of wine for members of the gallery” from an early-20 something POC receptionist, as she finished pouring it for the common person next to us, on a Thursday opening night, at a quarterway-full gallery, at 7pm, the prime hour of openings, landed as a shock to me.
was it the way I was dressed ? (I dressed fine). did she think I was a bum ? (I am not). or did the fact that we had a near-empty glass from the gallery next door virtual signaled something ? (I just didn’t want to create even more used plastic). It didn’t matter - I’d attended countless openings and art shows and all kinds of events and happenings, never had I ever been met with such alarming discrimination this way, especially during what would generally be a jovial time for all due to the occasion. and this treatment and response especially jarring from a gallery personnel, who at the end of the day, is there to conduct and uphold a certain courtesy fit to help the gallery make sales and or connections.
She had no idea of me nor I of her, but these words in the context which presented them assured I would never suggest this gallery to anyone. The millions of galleries trying to gain footing in New York surely this one will not be missed, but one should never undermine the power of suggestion and word of mouth. One never know who would help connect a sale to whom, and that, is the importance of treating anyone with equal courtesy and common respect. And apparently, this gallery or their representative lacks this basic...
