Read moreSaw "The Perfect Crime," intrigued by its record-holding status of having the same lead actress for all its 27 years.
Despite some surface level attempts to update it via references to modern technology like Alexa, the play itself is dated to the roots. You can feel a bygone era in its Freudian dream analysis, unsolvable paternity issues, and insensitive approach to gender identity. At the same time, it's interesting to observe how some of the themes in this old show have come back into relevance with recent political events.
The acting felt more alive from the newer cast members. It seemed to me that Catherine Russell knew so well what the next beat would be that her character never truly seemed shocked. For a mystery with many feints, twists, and practical jokes on what we let slide in stage productions, it added further confusion that we could not reliably read what the protagonist knows.

Read moreI recently attended a performance of "Perfect Crime" at one of the small Off-Broadway theaters, and I have to say it was an incredibly disappointing experience. The show's long run is baffling given its poor quality. The script is convoluted and difficult to follow, and the performances left much to be desired.
The lead actress, who I learned is also the show's manager and known for rarely missing performances, desperately needs to be replaced. However, given her management position, this seems unlikely to happen. I've seen community theater productions that far surpass the quality of this show.
The experience was so unbearable that my group decided to leave during intermission rather than sit through the second act. It's truly a waste of both time and money. For an Off-Broadway production, the standards should be much higher. I strongly advise against purchasing tickets to this show - save your money and time for a more worthwhile...
