Went to experience the show "Once On This Island" for the second time... And again, it was Amazing!!!
Once again the play/musical talks about the story of Timune, an island girl who falls in love with a young rich aristocrat, but could not be together due to their Status (He was mulatto and rich, she was poor and dark)
The musical/play appears similar to the story of the "Little Mermaid" but with a Carribean twist. The telling of a story about a island, the folks who adhere to the "God's" who directed their lives, their loves, as well as their destination.
Once On This Island was lively, the colors of the sceneries, the not to mention the sand, that represented the "Earth of ASAKA" The water, that was "Agwe's Domain"
And in the play were choices to me made between Love (Ezulie) and Death (Papa Gee) and which Timune was part of that pawn caught up in the choosing of saving the young man's life, of whom she loves, or letting him die so that Papa Gee would have/take their soul ..
I enjoyed the music, the dancing, especially being blown away by Alex Newell's rendition of "Mama will Provide" as well as the traditional African dancing that stirred both body and Spirit... Too Amazing!
Although the ending brought a little tear, it was also met with renewal as well as joy (The Death of Timune/Transitioning into a Tree) and at the end, repemption was made, and the story was continued by a young child who remembered the story, and will continue to "Tell The Story" to others.
The play/musical ends, and folks go outside and wait for autographs and pictures. I was happy to see the show not once, but twice... ingrained in my mind and in my heart always
#WeTellTheStory! #MamaWillProvide!...
Read moreI was wrongfully and unjustly accused of touching the actors, talking to the actors and making them feel unsafe at the 2.7.25 show. I was seated 2nd row from the stage and was forced to move to the back of the Theatre or be kicked out. When I attempted to speak with the house manager afterwards, she was dismissive, rude and refused to hear my evidence supporting/proving they got the wrong woman. My friend who was with me also confirmed I never moved nor talked but she refused to hear us and said "you're lucky I even let you stay." I came from Seattle to see the show and have been involved in Theatre since I was a pre-teen. I know the rules and etiquette and researched this specific Theatre to learn what was ok and what wasn't. I kept to myself the entire show but was escorted out of my seats, in front of everyone, after the 2nd act started. I was humiliated. I was cheated out of my seats that I paid over $700 for.... and it was because of mistaken identity. There was a woman on the railing, about 5 or 6 rows up, who WAS doing everything i was accused of. You can see the online posts of what she did and where she was sitting. It was physically impossible for me to touch anyone as they never came close to me and if I were to touch them, I would have had to stand up and lean over the railing to do it. Nor did they come close enough for me to even speak to them. However, I would NEVER do that anyway and kept to myself the entire show. They got the wrong person and ruined a night I'd been waiting months for and pulled me from my $700 seats. Worst experience and I'm making sure my innocence is plastered everywhere as I didn't deserve what...
Read moreI recently saw Just in Time at Circle in the Square and was absolutely blown away. The theatre’s unique in-the-round setup is transformed into a swinging nightclub, with live music and immersive staging that makes every seat feel like the best in the house. Jonathan Groff leads with charisma and warmth as Bobby Darin, and the venue’s intimate layout makes you feel like you’re part of the show.
Circle in the Square has a rich history of staging bold, memorable productions—and the lineup you’ll find in that basement space is nothing short of impressive. I remember seeing the revival of Once on This Island (2017–2019) and being amazed by how the stage was literally covered with sand and even live animals, which brought the story to life in a visceral way . A few years earlier, Fun Home ran from April 2015 to September 2016, offering emotional depth and powerful storytelling that left a mark . And who could forget Godspell, which was revived there from late 2011 to mid‑2012, filling the stage with vibrant energy and ensemble charisma .
Each of these productions showcases Circle in the Square’s extraordinary ability to reinvent itself and fully inhabit the world of each piece. Whether it's the intimacy of musical storytelling or dramatic innovation, this venue consistently surprises and delights.
If you're looking for an intimate, creatively staged Broadway experience that truly adapts to its shows—and always leaves you talking about it afterward—Circle in the Square is a must-visit. I can’t wait to see what...
