I recently bought a home near this grocery store, so I tried to support this business by shopping here instead of going to the Whole Foods which is about twenty mins away from me. Huge mistake on my part - I will not be shopping here again. I understand that as a black woman, I am a minority in the Ironbound. But I can’t take the discrimination and racism anymore. Both times I shopped here, I was discriminated against. The first time I came with my Jewish boyfriend and we were checking out when my boyfriend made a comment about a rat he saw near the produce section. The cashier, a man, rudely asked if we were together even though we were standing close to each other and both were putting items on the check out machine. I have never had this happen when I dated within my race. I think the cashier was shocked to see a black woman and white man together and it showed. The second time I went, I went by myself and decided to try the self check out area. The woman who was assisting me was rude to me and I think it was because I am a black woman. I think she assumed that i was trying to steal? For context, I am an attorney and can afford the groceries even though they are overpriced and not as good as Whole Foods. I wanted to support this business since it is so close to my home, however, I refuse to support a racist establishment. I will be either going to Whole Foods or have my groceries delivered by fresh direct from now on. You lost a customer. P.s. try training your cashiers better. The fact that this cashier looked down on me when I’m an attorney is sad, and I know it was because of my race. This store has a racism problem. You need to train your...
Read moreI sort of visit supermarkets as a hobby, if you can believe that, and this a WORLD CLASS SUPERMARKET. Come for the Portuguese olive oil, a loss leader they always sell embarrassingly cheap out front. If you need cilantro or collard greens or limes you can know you will always get plentiful and fresh here. Don't miss canned sardines in olive oil and Brazilian coffee. The fish market workers can be helpful, and various grades of dried cod are always available at a competitive price, and the supermarket is open 7 days a week. Frozen pao de queijo to bake at home. Frozen packets of fruit pulp like passion fruit and acai to add to smoothies at home. Sausages, charcuterie, the Portuguese cheese section is like a museum. The padaria is a little overwhelming if you don't know all the freshly baked rolls and you never go wrong no matter what 'it's only a piece of bread' ha ha. It's connected to a liquor store which deserves it's own review for it's great Portuguese wines at great prices. Also, containers of hot food are available to take out. Once you're all shopped out visit the Portuguese bar and restaurant...
Read moreDirty and disgusting place. Selling rotten and subpar produce. They employ illegals almost exclusively. Even the cashiers and deli workers cannot speak English. How can you be employed at a deli counter or as a cashier and not speak English? How can you not know what the word "pound" means? All toiletries, batteries, formula, etc is locked up in a special section to prevent the illegals from stealing it. No selection whatsoever.
Meat prices are outrageous. Ever since the ACME on Ferry street closed down, they have no competition and have jacked up all of the prices, epscially meat and produce. We drive to Kearny now and give our hard earned money to the local Shop Rite.
Store Management is a couple of rude 20 something girls. Everything is a joke. No responsible adults employed there at all, just illegals and kids. Every kind of beggar and illegal vendor is posted up out front. Sorry, I don't want a bootleg DVD or a fake Mexican soccer jersey. And don't even think of going there over the first couple of days of the month. Just a sea of illegals paying with foodstamps and WIC.
Sorry...
