I had a highly disappointing stay at Staybridge Suites Newark - Fremont, an IHG Hotel, due to unprofessional staff, retaliatory charges, and poor management.
Retaliatory Charges ā After I contacted IHG regarding service issues, I was suddenly charged $50 for a washcloth with makeup stains. Housekeeping failed to provide service for four nights, and instead of addressing the issue professionally, the manager, Eleanor, claimed my room was 'messy' and imposed the charge. This felt retaliatory and unprofessional, as an expected accumulation of used towels and trash naturally occurs when housekeeping is not provided.
Inconsistent Policies ā Despite having a āDo Not Disturbā sign, maintenance knocked on my door at 8 AM and even called me. If they could contact me for maintenance, why was I never notified about housekeeping options?
Unprofessional Front Desk Staff ā One front desk staff questioned me when I simply asked for soap and tried to limit dishwasher soap to one per day, even though I had been there for three nights with only one provided. Worse, she was hiding in the back, out of sight, on a personal call instead of being at the front desk where she should have been assisting guests. When I called the front desk, she ignored the phone, and when I went down in person, there was a sign claiming she was assisting another guestābut she remained in the back, out of sight, still on the call. Whether or not she was speaking to a guest, she was not available to assist in-person guests or answer the front desk phone, which is unprofessional. Additionally, when I requested an item, instead of delivering it as expected, she told me to go to the front desk to pick it up myself, further showing the lack of service.
Amenity Choice Denied ā As an IHG Diamond Elite member, I should have been given the choice between 500 points or a welcome amenity at check-in. Instead, the front desk automatically applied 500 points without asking me, violating IHGās policy. When I later inquired about it, the manager, Eleanor, refused to correct the mistake, dismissing it as ātoo late.ā This disregard for loyalty benefits shows a lack of professionalism and proper training in IHG policies.
Passive-Aggressive and Unaccommodating Management ā Instead of assisting guests, management handled concerns passively and refused to be helpful. There was no willingness to accommodate or resolve issues in a professional manner.
The overall experience was unprofessional and disappointing, and I would not recommend staying here due to the lack of professionalism, poor service, and retaliatory...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis was my second time staying at a Staybridge Suites the first time was at the one in San Bruno but this new one that just opened in Newark is by far the worst, I stayed here for 3 nights because I had already paid for it. I received the worst customer service, when I checked in I was given my room keys just to find out that it was the wrong room had to come back down to the front desk to get my actual room, when I got to the room I booked I noticed the AC was off, I get it itās to conserve energy but it was a hot day and the room was really really hot and it took a while for the AC to start, after that I walked around the room and I found some trash in the room and an empty baby bottle behind the bedroom door that was left from the previous people that stayed there, made me wonder what else did they forget to clean? Were the bed sheets clean? How about the other rooms? I called the front desk to have someone come and take it they said theyād send somebody right away, I waited 3 hours called back and they said someone should be coming, nobody ever came so I took the baby bottle myself out and brought it to them. The next day I went out left the room for about 8 hours but before I left I called the front desk to have someone come to my room to do light housekeeping (new towels, empty of trash new bed sheets) they told me they would send someone, when I got back the room was exactly how I left it nobody came to my room at all, I was really upset. In my last day at this place around 8:00 am we were all suddenly woken up by the fire alarm, it was extremely loud and scary everybody ran to the front of the building, nobody was telling us anything we didnāt know what was going on, even the fire department came and I overheard someone saying it was a false alarm that someone at the breakfast table had burned some bread and that triggered the alarm we didnāt see any managers or anybody to tell us it was a false alarm and that everything was ok, so we just decided to go back to the room and try to get some rest which is really difficult to get here with all the bad things happening. Iām really disappointed after I spent a lot of money for 3 nights in this hotel and I didnāt enjoy my stay and nothing was done about it even after I told the manager everything about...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreCHECKIN & TRANSITIONS Staff were always pleasant. Checkin speed is a bit slow but they try to be thorough. Spanish is valuable here if you want anything outside of the vanilla experience, communication can be hard otherwise. The public space were remarkably clean & expertly decorated. We thoroughly enjoyed chilling in the lounges, pool areas, & using the gym spaces.
ROOM https://youtu.be/pzvoCq3B8Sw https://youtu.be/p2Bnh3McV3c Essentially prefab apartments; modern, spacious, lots of utility & a real "homey" vibe. Seating is generic stock & uncomfortable but the workspace chair was very supportive on my back.
BED Beds were comfortable with high quality sheets, pillows, & duvet. A good mattress but poor base (SQUEAKY) & the bed slides out; not well-positioned.
BATH An effective split-bath that never felt awkwardly designed or inconvenient like most hotels. Dove bath products provided a soothing shower experience. Great water pressure, temperature control, & ample ledges for grooming or personal products. Weighty towels & tons of hooks for re-use ā»ļø.
FOOD & DRINK DoorDash friendly. Large breakfast arrangement of the usual continental rotation w/oatmeal bars, waffles, & pastries, etc. Lots of noteworthy breakfast items specifically: the eggs, waffles, & the meat selection-- French toast too! Coffee & juice fountain were also refreshing. The brewed coffee is really good; the In-room stuff is so-so. There aren't a lot of exciting restaurants nearby but there's a Costco across the street. Full fridge & kitchenette with stove & dish washer.
TV TV stand glued to the dresser, so not a lot of mobility. Difficult to hear over the AC running right in front of it. Not the best experience if watching from bed. Picture quality & port access was good otherwise.
WI-FI & CELL RECEPTION A wide range of performance. --Performance-- Video streaming - great Online gaming - great Video chatting - great --Nerd Stats-- 11-82 Mbps download 9-74 Mbps upload 0% packet loss 10 ms latency 41 ms jitter
NOISE Minus the kids running through halls, it was perfectly quiet.
VERDICT Everyday was... perfect. This was an excellent extended stay: consistent hospitality, service, & accommodations. I highly recommend this location & could see myself staying...
