I bought a ticket through United and they placed me with Avianca to arrive in SMR. As I was traveling from the US, I was allowed two baggages. I took off from Newark to Bogota and the next day Bogotá to Santa Marta. As I was going to sleep in Bogota before my flight to Santa Marta next day, I was hoping to pick up my baggage there. But my baggage went straight to Santa Marta. I spent a couple of hours at the airport and the “offices of United were closed. I went to ask about it and they said the luggage would go straight to Santa Marta without passing through customs in Bogota. I explained that I was told in Newark that I had to pick up my luggage in Bogota and place it on the flight to SMR next day. I even asked if I was going to be charge for an extra luggage upon return as Avianca just allows 1 bag domestically. The lady in Newark said no.
I then booked a returned two days later from Santa Marta to bogota to catch ny return to the US but I booked that flight on my own and directly at the Avianca (not through United). So, when I got back at the airport, they charged me 180000 (80 dols around) for a luggage because I had an “extra” one. I explained to them I was in transit and that I was going tot ravel next day to the United States. The international ticket allowed me 2 bags not one. That they are members Star Alliance as United is. That they are supposed to follow the policy of the international trip, etc. They argued with me for 40 mins. They did not let me talk, they did not let me explain, they basically treatened me to make me lose my flight, etc.
Sad story. Avianca has been taking advantage of the the Colombians for decades. I hope they rethink their mission because I am not giving them a try ever again.
Service at the Avianca counter was poor. Workers were mean, they did not let me even express myself, I showed them their policy online and they said I was not “interpreting correctly” the meaning. The lady (who did not want to give me her name) said that next time I should buy my ticket with United and not directly with Avianca.
The supervisor sent me a message with one of the workers, that he was busy and he could talk to me 20 minutes later. All a total mess. Yaks!
I felt that United let me down. I booked my trip with them and they did everything wrong. It is not fair that United places me with another airline if they are charging me extra for baggage. I was the reimbursement of the money I paid for...
Read moreHorrible experience on Thanksgiving weekend traveling back to the US. The first United inbound international flight was delayed for more than an hour and a half without providing any type of explanation as to what caused the delay, which made our arrival time to a connecting flight at EWR almost impossible to make. What's worst about all of this is the way United airline staff delt with the situation at EWR airport before someone magically helped out. They couldn’t care less if you miss a connecting flight, they couldn’t care less about you, your kids, and your luggages. I asked many of them to try to help out to get the luggages scanned and dropped off as we are racing against time where we had to exit the airport and come back again to check the bags in such a short period of time since this is our first entry port back home before heading to our final destination. We were fine if they would take the luggages and send them the next day, but just help us get on that plane so we get the kids home. We asked to be at least accompanied by someone who could get us through security quicker as we were running out of time. (TSA/CBP experience at EWR is a whole different experience that day with a separate review). What is more surprising is that most United staff are simply hanging out behind counters giving you blank looks or on their smart phone not paying any attention or trying to help. You ask for a manager, no one replies. It was simply disgusting and we wonder why our American based airlines are running out of business one after the other and are on a continuous decline in terms of service & customer experience compared to international...
Read moreThis review is for the flight itself. I already mentioned my experience at the airport elsewhere. It’s been a long time since I flew prior to this. About 15 years so I was nervous. The flight attendants were extremely nice and VERY attractive, especially the blonde with the glasses. I tend to get motion sickness when riding in Ubers but this took it to the next level. The takeoff was tough to manage but I knew I wouldn’t make it throughout the flight without having to be sick in the bathroom. On the landing is when everything went wrong for me, I was about to be really sick so I panicked and hit the attention button. Because we were in the process of landing the flight attendants had to make sure it was an emergency because everyone had to remain seated buckled in until the pilot was finishing landing. But I hit the button again because I had to run to the bathroom to vomit. The flight attendant allowed me to go to the bathroom otherwise I would’ve done it by my seat embarrassing myself and probably making others sick from the spectacle of it. They made sure I was ok by knocking on the door for updates. Then after we landed I got out to leave and they told me to feel better. Thank god they just didn’t give me a bag to do it at my seat I’m so thankful they allowed me to go to the bathroom to save the embarrassment. I added my flight in the picture for reference of who the flight attendants were on the flight with me. Thank you so much...
