Southport is a very special place. This is one pace that offers everything you could possibly want to do in a day. Not to mention for your entire life like myself. Shopping, crafts, jewelry store , restaurant's of all kinds. From very formal to waterfront burgers. Overlooking the mouth of the Famous "Cape Fear River" Fort Anderson and the Garrison is your backdrop from the pier. Which is what this reviews about. It's a great place to be able to go enjoy fishing without a boat. And it's located on the famous banks of Southport know for it's big flounder,trout,Red and Black drum. Sheepshead. Then all kinds of cool different structure fish. It's a concrete structured pier with wood rails. And the view is all the Rave man. It's the Cape Fear River Mouth. Notorious for it's quick squalls. Ruff waters and heavy currents. BlackBeard "Edward Teach frequented this area. As many other pirates. Caswell Beach is a look across the river. Which at the northern most point. Is Fort Caswell known in history for it's protection of the entrance. Also. Battery island which was used for shelling enemy ships is also straight across from the end of the pier. Bald Head Island which ferry's people over to the island is just at the left side of the Entrance to the Channel. Old Baldy Lighthouse is visible from the waterfront on clear days. Read moreI have a very special place in my heart for the water front of Southport. As a child, my friend lived in the apartments where the Martime museum is currently. (Used to be apartments) We RAN those streets! I know the place well. Sunday, we took my daughter for her Senior photo shoot in my old stomping grounds. The beat part is, short of more people, traffic, cars and some erosion, it is EXACTLY as it was in the 80's to mid 90's! I went to school at Southport Elementary and have lived in Long Beach, AKA Oak Island, the majority of my life. I love it! I hope that Southport recognizes the beautiful jewel it has, and never allows anyone or any policy to disturb the beauty and historical significance of our quaint little home. Have a seat in a swing, on a bench, or in the gazebo and enjoy the views of the Cape Fear River. You can watch as ships and ferries travel back and forth. You can see Bald Head island and Fort Caswell from this spot. A great place for photo ops and a relaxed environment to enjoy a coffee from Port City Java or an ice cream from Flavas or Spikes.
