Need a place to entertain the kids for an hour? This is it, especially if they don't want to be dragged around craft shops in Southport. A delightful museum that gives adults an introduction to colonial and maritime history of our area, including a great diorama of native life. Volunteers give great information and the exhibits also include hurricane history and maritime rescues. Their gift shop has a great selection of kids books and toys and even books for adults. If you are going to Southport for the day, do the kids a favor and stop here, then take the ferry back. Better yet, drive up 133 and stop at Ft. Anderson and Brunswick Towne for a great outdoor walk along the river, when the weather is cooler!

Great place to start your day in Southport - there are bathrooms and a wide lawn facing the water. Inside is a helpful and well-staffed visitor's desk and a few rooms of local history. I saw some kids running around doing a scavenger hunt, which looked fun. I loved the old photographs and the ships models. If nothing else, it's a great place to sit facing the water.

Free! Historical nautical displays of the Southport NC area. Interactive displays and gift shop. Scavenger hunt paper puzzle for kids to keep busy. The neat thing is the real functional submarine telescope that you can look through and swivel 360 degrees. It extends above the museum roof. I have never seen anything like it!

Having young kids, museums aren’t exactly high on their list of things to do, but this place blew us away with their hospitality and friendly staff. As soon as we stepped in we were greeted by a friendly staffer who gave our kids some games and a scavenger hunt to play with stuff in the museum. To my shock, the kiddos loved it and got very into it running and yelling throughout the exhibits. Again to my surprise the staff was encouraging when at other places we would’ve been “hushed”. Best part is at the end the kids got a free prize for completing the puzzle! They LOVED IT and as a parent I really appreciated their approach and we all had a great time. Totally recommend and...

This Museum is a perfect "Rainy Day" visit. The location and building are easy to find and nice to navigate inside. The volunteers were helpful and knowledgeable about the history around the area relating to maritime as well as other topics. We thoroughly enjoyed the Black Beard and Queen Annes Revenge portion of the tour but as soon as that portion is over, the visit can get a little drawn out and be a little bland. But that shouldn't hinder the fact that there is plenty of maritime history and neat facts and exhibits to look at. Took us about an hour to go through the whole thing. Will recommend to others when in the area or need ideas for a bad weather day when...
