My experience at Grand Prix Amusements was interesting to say the least. As I was registering to race, one of the workers, Shawn, approaches me and tells me that because my hair is long, I won’t be able to race. He explained that my hair could get caught on something and I could potentially be scalped. When I asked if I could secure my hair with a head tie, he said no because they take no risks with safety precautions. This was completely understandable at first.
It’s important to note that my hair is in knotless braids and goes down to my lower back. I can safely secure it in a multitude of ways. However I was told that because of this I could not race. The other people in my party could race, so I got a chance to read the rules on hair which state: “long hair must be tied above the shoulder & tucked into the head sock.” Another rule states: “driver assumes all responsibility and liability for his/her actions while participating. Including damage to equipment and injury of other patrons.”
So to my understanding I should have been able to race as long as my hair could be safely tied and tucked into the helmet. Especially given that another young lady with straight European hair that came down to the middle of her back was allowed to race without having to put her hair up or tuck it into the head sock of the helmet. Not to mention that in case of injury I would assume responsibility, according to the rules which participants acknowledge and agree to before racing.
So I did not race. And I did not enjoy my experience or treatment. I also didn’t enjoy witnessing Shawn make an exception for the other lady with long hair immediately after informing me otherwise.
I don’t think this takes away from the experience at this establishment. However I was not even granted the opportunity to experience, hence my...
Read moreVery rude and unprofessional staff and manager. The staff was very accusatory to members of our group and even threatened to call the track across the street to warn them we might be coming there. I know the crowds that frequent OCMD….I can assure you that our group was not among the behavior that is exhibited by many. I realize that safety is of utmost importance, but there were circumstances where you can’t see with the helmets on and accidental bumps occur. The staff took all the fun out of something that was supposed to be just that. Being there on a holiday weekend, they surely weren’t busy…I wonder why. My husband has been a business owner for 35 years…these people don’t have a clue. Be professional to people patronizing your business and people will frequent your establishment. Maybe you should just install lanes so that people can’t accidentally bump into each other….that’s about how fun y’all are. Our group was advised to try the bumper boats upon our return to the track…no worries, we won’t be returning. I’m fully expecting a defensive reply to this post as I’ve seen how the negative reviews are...
Read moreDon't go in the heat of the day!!! We waited until around 230ish and was still sooooo hot. Was wonderful that there werent any lines at the time of day but trade off was dealing with the heat.
We paid for the 2 hr bracelet $43/ea...check their website for a downloadable coupon...gets you $3 off per bracelet. A lot of the rides were geared for the 12 and up ages...was a challenge for our 9 and 10 year olds...they got bored riding the same couple of rides or having to wait on an older child to drive for them.
Staff are young locals. Had to ask a couple of the young men to watch their language. Several staff appeared to be on the clock when we first got there but not really interested in working rides that weren't manned. But it was Myra to the rescue...very helpful with instructions and assisting the younger ones on the rides. She moved with them to each of the unmanned rides. Thanks Myra!!
Restrooms clean. Snack shack with arcade allowed us to cool off half way thru and get a cold drink (snacks reasonably priced). Overall it was a fun day and we would come back...in...
