AMC DINE-IN Prairiefire 17 — Attraction in Overland Park

On my most recent visit to the AMC DINE-IN Prairiefire 17 movie theater, I was excited to see the latest installment of the John Wick series, starring the ever-talented Keanu Reeves. However, my excitement was dampened when I found out that the kitchen had already closed before my movie time, leaving me with a rumbling stomach and the heartbreak of missing out on a delicious meal while watching the heart-pumping action on the big screen.

As Nicole Kidman says in the previews before the cinematic adventure begins, "heartbreak feels good in place like this", but experiencing it due to an empty stomach is definitely not one of them.

I have had 2 good experiences and 2 bad ones. By far the worst was the most recent experience.

I brought my elderly, walker-bound friend to The Theory of Everything on a weekday afternoon. There were only 4 people, including us, in the theater. The server was very friendly, when he took our orders. He brought our (overly expensive, but yummy) drinks back quickly. That was the end of our good experience.

After the previews, the movie screen went black and stayed black. 15 minutes after the movie should have started, the server came back and asked if the screen had been that way for a while. We told him yes. He said he would notify someone and have it taken care of, and that's the last time we saw him.

NO ONE returned with an explanation, and the screen stayed black. 20 minutes after the movie should have started, one of the other patrons stood up and went to get help, and returned. 10 minutes later, (30 minutes after the movie should have started), he and his companion left.

My companion and I had nothing better to do, and it's a huge ordeal to get her in and out of the theater with her health and her walker, so we stayed until it was 35 minutes after the movie should have started, and finally we got up to leave. As we were leaving, we saw a manager for the FIRST time who offered NO APOLOGY, but said he would have the movie started in about 30 seconds. So we sat back down. 40 minutes after the movie should have started, it did indeed finally start, but we were left to sit there with ZERO acknowledgement of our presence for 40 full minutes. Would we have been left to sit there for the whole time w/o anyone noticing there was no movie being projected?

We only sat there for as long as we did due to the difficulty of moving my friend, and the fact that the other patron had gone to get help, so we assumed some action was being taken. The lack of apologies is literally unforgivable.

Before we even reached the specific theater within the facility, we stood in front of the ticket taker while she was talking to another employee. We waited patiently for them to finish talking, thinking that it was company business, and then I realized they were just chatting as friends while leaving us to stand there waiting to have our ticket torn in two and told which theater to enter. So, I interrupted them. I chalked it up to youth. Now I know that the VERY bad customer service starts at the top (with the manager brushing by us w/ an excuse, but no apology) and trickles down.

It's like they don't care. What a shame because it's a beautiful theater that is close to my elderly companion's home. I may give it one more chance, but the three strikes rule...

Horrible. NEVER AGAIN STAY AWAY! Where to start! The GM should be fired, the assistant managers should be fired, and from our experience, most the the employees. You walk in with questions, but the hostess stand is empty, because young teens with attitudes are hiding behind the soda stands gossiping, and flashing dirty looks to you, and rolling their eyes when you ask for help and point to to self-serve ticket machines that don't work, don't print, so then they tell you to go to the Box Office, where again no one is there because they went to the bathroom without telling anyone, or are flirting/gossiping also behind the soda stand over at Concessions, and act resentful that you're making them walk over to do their job. The so-called "bartenders" are so slow, you'll miss your movie if you wait for them, as they can't mix drinks, and don't know how to work the computer, either old flakes with Alzheimers, or the only assistant mgrs over 21 who are allowed to serve alcohol, and are faking it. It's filthy. Saw a black bug crawling at Concessions -- roach, beetle, cricket, I didn't get close enough to see, but the staff wasn't keeping the place clean. The popcorn was burnt and too salty, the "gourmet" popcorn was stale, the soda from the selfserve Coke machines tastes nasty, the food from the kithchen was old, cold, hard, they didn't get our order right, failed to deliver it to us, left it on a shelf at concessions, and made us miss part of the movie to try to fix it, but incompetency from everyone involved made it impossible to get right. Trying to get a refund, we waited 10 minutes for someone with authority and security on the computer to do so, but no one showed, so we were just out of luck, out of time, and gave up on them. The seats in our theater were ratty old furniture with no reclining, no arm rests, or foot rests, the most uncomfortable I've ever been in a theater. Trying to get refunds, the worker couldn't figure out the computer, saying it was our fault the way we paid, and again expected us to wait another eternity for someone who didn't show, and obviously didn't care. How does AMC justify a theater being run like this? Heads would roll in my company if they treated customers this way! They are in desperate need of new management with the intelligence to figure out how to fix the problems at hand, and the common sense to focus on the bigger picture. Whoever's in charge is obviously lacking the commitment to run it right, and can't see the forest...
