Such a fun place to take your family and/or friends to explore the farm and park grounds to learn about its history. Just off 495/ The Beltway, the admission is free to this National Park. There are picnic table options, but be prepared to bring your own food and drinks as there are only options to fill your water bottles. We also found that the place wasn't too busy as some nearby parks, so it's nice in a sense that it doesn't feel crowded with lots of people. The park itself has a few interesting components with a historical farm that contains historic buildings from when the property was used for agricultural purposes. There's an air conditioned visitor center with a small gift shop and some interpretive exhibits for the kiddos. When we were there, there were National Park Staff present and they were happy to answer any questions about the property. There are also a few different types of farm animals (pigs, chickens, goats horses and cows to name a few) that are out and about on the property. The second interesting part is exploring the trails and seeing how the historic house connects to the land and American history. One of the trails is over a mile and provides an awesome view of the Capitol area as it goes down to Oxon Cove (which is an inlet of the Potomac River). We spent about two hours on a clear day here, but one could easily spend multiple hours checking out the trail system and property as there is lots of scenic views and history to take in. While there is shade in the trail system, id recommend bringing water and sunscreen to protect your skin. Mosquito repellent as well since you are nearby the water. Overall, would recommend this to anyone who is interested in a fun (and free!) family visit or wants to explore more of the trail systems in the...
Read moreIf you have young children or even young teenagers, Oxon Hill Animal Farm is definitely a place you want to put at the top of your entertainment list. It is an absolutely beautiful place to get away from the city. You will have a great time if you pack yourself a picnic basket of non-perishable food items or even a cooler. There are a few picnic tables or you could bring a blanket to spread out on the grass. It's a good place if you want to get away from people. Their free parking lot has very few shaded spots so be prepared if it's hot outside and be sure to check the forecast. It's a place you can spend the whole day and it doesn't cost anything except your gasoline. You will be able to walk around a beautiful Farm like setting and see wonderful farm animals. They have very clean restrooms, a nice free parking lot and clean Sweet Air to breathe. Perfect for young lovers. My parents took me there when I was a child. When I was a young teenager with no money I would take my new girlfriends. They always loved it when we rolled around in the grass or took a horseback ride. Go there and see for yourself then...
Read moreJust across the Southwest D.C.-Maryland border is a 19th century farm preserved by the National Park Service. Every day, the park ranger opens the gate around 6:30 a.m. and closes it at 5 p.m. All are welcome to visit the farm free of charge. Here's why you should visit:
Museum: It's an interactive museum. As you walk the farm's campus, you'll read historical markers and go inside almost 200-year-old brick barns. You learn about the farm and the history it witnessed (like being attacked during the War of 1812 or watching Alexandria across the Potomac get captured by the British).
Farm: You can see horses, goats, chickens, hogs and cows on the farm. They offer some farm programming for kids like chicken feedings, tractor rides, etc.
Trails: Beyond the early 19th century farm house is a trail that leads to Oxon Cove and wooded trail with river views. Once at he cove, there are benches, views of Alexandria, picnic tables and a running trail that goes for miles.
Oxon Hill Farm is a perfect adventure for the whole family, runners and...
