Falls Bridge in Philadelphia is a notable landmark with a rich history and architectural significance. Officially opened in June 1895, this steel Pratt truss bridge spans the Schuylkill River in Fairmount Park. It connects Kelly Drive at Calumet Street with Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive at Neill Drive, replacing a wooden covered bridge that previously occupied the site. The bridge’s design features stonemasonry abutments and two piers, supporting three Pratt-type pin-connected trusses. While initially planned as a double-decker bridge, the upper deck was never constructed due to funding constraints. The bridge, measuring 556 feet in length and 25.9 feet in width, facilitates two lanes of vehicular traffic and includes sidewalks on both sides. Enhancing its nighttime visibility, blue LED lights were added in 2007. The Falls Bridge not only serves as a functional piece of infrastructure but also as a historical and aesthetic element within the urban landscape of...
Read moreDecember 2020: Love this old , beautiful bridge (1895). Helps me get across the river without getting wet, which is perfect since i am not good at swimming. Has dual pedestrian walkway for safe foot traffic. Apart from that basic function, this bridge also forms an integral part of my walk/bike circuit between Kelly drive, MLK drive and the Art museum. The MLK drive on one side is sometimes closed for automotive traffic to encourage bikes and pedestrian traffic. When I used to live in that neighborhood, for some reason, I hated the traffic lights on the Kelly drive side. I do not recall why. It was either an unnecessary left-only green light, or the opposing green was of a longer duration. If i find it, I will update this review. Anyway, I welcome everyone to use this lovely bridge for your river-crossing or other needs. BTW. the picture below is not of the falls bridge but the...
Read moreOne of my ten favorite bridges in Philly! The East Falls Bridge serves as a vital connection between the Northwest and Western sections of the city for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. Beautiful and architecturally simple but elegant, the bridge sits in a wonderful spot on the river and views of it and from it can be breathtaking, particularly at sunset. Absolutely important bridge for walkers, runners, hikers, rollerbladers, and cyclists as it connects Kelly Drive, the Schuylkill River Trail, and the start of the Wissahickon, with MLK Drive and West Fairmount Park, making it great for folks to do a loop around the river. Supposedly closing sometime soon for several years, I wish we could get back to building and rebuilding things as quickly as we did one hundred and twenty plus years ago when this bridge was...
