I had an amazing experience at The Retro Game Cave! It was my first time visiting, and I wasn't sure of the hours. They were closed when they stopped by, but the owner Adam spoke to me through their Ring doorbell camera. I told him I was looking for Turbografx-16 games. He had me give him my phone number, and he promised he would text me images of his TG-16 inventory when the shop was open. Sure enough, a couple hours later he followed through with images of his inventory. That is SERIOUSLY amazing customer service.
I had to go out of town but I came back later in the afternoon when the shop was open. I am a massive retro game collector (5000+ games) and I know how to tell a good retro game store from a bad one. First and foremost, the SELECTION of games at The Retro Game Cave was unparalleled. Rarity after rarity in practically every corner of the shop! I turned around, and I'd discover even more rare games. It was so much fun just to browse -- it's sort of like walking into a fantastical treasure trove and swimming through the gold coins and gemstones. Really felt like something out of a dream. (Adam even has some game-related oddities like a VHS of Donkey Kong and the Crystal Coconut, hah!)
Most typical retro game stores have tons of sports titles, shovelware, etc., but it was really clear from the selection here that Adam curates his inventory to include mostly desired titles across tons of consoles. When I walked in and saw a classic "Vectrex" console on the counter, I knew I was in for a good experience.
Secondly, Adam knows his stuff! We talked shop for over half an hour. The guy clearly loves what he sells, as we were able to go back and forth about rare games like we were old friends. Many of the competitors in the area, when you ask them about a certain game, usually don't know the history behind the game and just look it up on PriceCharting or eBay. My experience with Adam was genuinely refreshing compared to the other stores. It felt like a private, one-on-one sales experience where he let me check the conditions of the games I was purchasing, and even showed me some truly rare consoles I had never seen in-person before (a TurboExpress!).
Adam sells games at typical market value, which as we all know tend to be in flux depending on the week. In my opinion, having been a collector for many years, it is always worth the very slight premium to be able to look at a game in real life to assess its condition before purchasing. Factoring that in, and for the immense amount of time he took to make sure I was happy, the prices at The Retro Game Cave were more than reasonable!
Really, I can't overstate how memorable of an experience it was shopping here. Between the great selection, the condition of the games, and the one-on-one shopping experience, it was really a pleasure to find a place that takes pride in what it sells.

Read moreWhat a great experience I had at The Retro Game Retro Cave! First things first, make sure you call first because he may not be there even during business hours which was my mistake (when I didn't read on the website) the first time I went over there. Adam was kind enough to return my call and explain to me he was out picking up more inventory for his store. Very polite and professional. He also convinced me to return the next day which I did. So every time I go on vacation somewhere I find the best retro video game store in the area, visit and at least buy something to take back home. I was visiting from Arizona with my wife and staying in West New York so this wasn't close but well worth the Uber ride considering there were quite a few others on the way but not with nearly as good reviews or great reputation as this store. My wife and I walked in and were greeted by Adam, the owner. Him and I are the same age so it was super easy to relate on the types of games we grew up playing. The inventory is in a room but don't be fooled there is plenty to look at/buy when it comes to games for I think almost any platform as well as accessories, toys, cards and more. I saw some games here I've never seen at some of the other retro stores which was cool. I picked up four games and Adam gave me a really good deal. As promised, this will be a go to spot for me every time I go visit back home (Jersey). I couldn't figure out how to add a picture to this post but the games I picked up for my son's and I collection were Double Dragon III Nintendo, Vectorman Sega Genesis, Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith Xbox and Lego Drome...
Read moreFirst time at RGC today. Adam was welcoming and very helpful guiding me through what he had to offer. Adam likes to chat and get to know his clients, which is a plus in a community like this. It also helps him to match you with his stock.
The store, while physically small, is loaded with a large selection of games. There are display shelves with some great highlights for sale, but there are also some stacks of additional stock. I was looking for SNES games, and Adam had the largest collection I’ve seen so far from 3 other stores. It takes a bit of time and patience to peruse the additional stock, but that wasn’t something that bothered me; it was a treasure hunt of sorts.
Adam’s prices seem to be in line with other stores from what I’ve seen. The items did not have listed prices and seemed to be based on market value for the day. Nothing seemed outrageous beyond the outrageous market demands for some games that would be extremely expensive elsewhere too. For what I picked up, prices were fair.
One of the main draws of RGC is the ability to test your games on site. Adam will give it a test before you buy so you know it works, but it’s also an opportunity to give gameplay a quick shot if one wants. Very nice to have that ability. I tested a bunch of games and Adam was nothing but supportive. Huge plus.
RGC, much like other retro stores, seems to post stock updates on Instagram, so that’s a plus too.
I plan on returning in the future to talk gaming and to get some further recommendations from Adam. The man appreciates Batman Returns on the SNES as much as I do, it seems. Gotta...
