Very disappointed that while I was there, they actually closed gates and turned off the lights as I was walking the tents that were still open. I understand that it was a rainy and windy night and that many tents had closed up shop. However, I walked passed several other folks still trying to shop and even the Oktoberfest tent with the older gentleman closing up his tent while I was walking towards the large tent with ornaments, but on my way back up to Bulloch Hall the gates had been closed off. After squeezing past those and going to the bakery and hot chocolate tent, where Gianni was kind enough to give me a cookie with my hot cocoa (with an awesome toasted marshmallow!) he told me he was being forced to close (before 8:20). I planned to come back again the following day; however, on my walk back to my car, the lights were shut off. So there I was, now alone in the the dark. Luckily Christmas lights still adorned the trees so I made it back to my car parked in their lot. There were a couple vendor cars still packing up. Thankfully. I am not sure I will go back nor recommend others to either. The docents are knowledgeable and share info embedded in stories about the Kings, Dunwoodys, Bullochs and Roosevelts. Role of slavery in the house’s history is honored, including highlighting the impressive masonry and carpentry throughout the tour. Original flooring, doors throughout. Be sure to ask to see the monstrous attic with original flooring. We rarely see trees mature enough to produce such wide planks, anymore. We stopped by near Christmas time and they had a theme of women who have made contributions, such as the woman who invented Monopoly, Susan B. Anthony, etc. It had some nice information, however it seemed like much of the house was taken away from the guests; it was too cluttered.
I don't feel like I got much of how someone in that house would've lived their life or the historical connection between the home's owner and the women that were being mentioned in the display.
The area is gorgeous, but again I feel like they could've done more...
