We came at just the right time to immediately get seated at a 4-top table. Service started out kind of slow, but it was very busy. The room was also incredibly loud...to the point of making conversation across our table difficult. Coupled with the drunk chick whose chair back kept encroaching into my space the farther I scooted away from her, it was almost middle school cafeteria-like in ambiance.
That said, once service got rolling, it remained efficient and friendly throughout our stay. Fresh flatware, napkins, and plates appeared regularly and our server had a ready and contagious smile.
I had the Georgia shrimp and grits, minus the Vidalia onion, because I am allergic to onions. It's a very small portion for $18 and would have been less than what I consider to be an entree-sized portion, had we not had several appetizers. But however diminutive the portion, what was in the bowl was incredibly delicious. The Gouda grits were creamy and hot, there was a lot of sausage and tasso, and the blistered cherry (or grape--I think the difference is purely semantics) tomatoes lent a nice sweetness. That low country sauce was more like gravy and I could have eaten a quart of it like soup, it was so tasty.
My lady had the sea scallops, which consisted of four very large--maybe 2.5" in diameter and 1.5" thick--scallops on a bed of Carolina gold rice cooked "risotto"style with fresh spring peas and lemon butter. She couldn't eat it all, so I was able to snag a scallop and some rice. The scallop had a nice sear, but could have used some additional time in the heat...it was a bit undone (for my preference)in the middle, although it was very tender and had great flavor. Did I mention that the scallops are huge? Seriously. The rice was nice, too.
One kiddo had the shrimp and grits, the other had the braised boneless short rib. I had several bites, which were fall-off-the-(nonexistent)-bone tender and packed with the kind of umami sensations that are best produced by long and slow cooking and the inclusion of complementary spices. It was like my momma's best roasts, but in a different way. The pile of carrots alongside the rib had the greens still attached and were several different colors, drizzled with Tupelo honey. A side of greens (turnip? mustard? collard? I dunno) were too sweet for me to appreciate. I grew up in the south eating southern food, but it wasn't in Georgia. Where I come from, we don't dump sugar into every damned thing that we eat. Adulterating greens with sugar is silly.
We ordered sides of mac-n-cheese (delicious!) and smoked Gouda au gratin potatoes. The nicely baked pucks of spuds arrived in small cast iron pans and were incredibly creamy, cheesy, and cooked just to the right 'doneness'.
I had the Heywood Provisions andouille in the grits and in the Pigs in a Blanket appetizer. It wasn't like any andouille that I've ever had, being fattier, less dense, and spiced differently...more like regular smoked sausage. But it was probably the best smoked sausage that I've ever had, with layers of flavor and a great smoky flavor. I'd like to find some for cooking at home.
The wine list is modest. Ignore the beer list and just ask what is on tap. Seriously. Not a single thing that I asked for on the beer list was available, so shortcut the nonsense and just ask your server. I had several different IPAs that I had never tried and they were all delicious...I would have not discovered them had I not asked.
To sum up, The Mill is a solid four stars, maybe four and a half. For two adults and two early teens, our tab--including tip--was over $330. That sum included quite a bit of adult beverages, but still...some noise abatement devices would mitigate the roar of the diners. Repeating "Huh?" and "What?!" hundreds of times during dinner when you're only 2-3 feet away from your interlocutor is ludicrous, outside of a middle- or...
Read moreAfter seven years of living here in East Cobb, we finally made it to The Mill. Had Brunch with some neighbor friends away from the kids for some adult socializing.
We first arrive and the Valet guys were friendly and just genius nice. As we were walking up the stairs I didn't know the restaurant shared the building with a State Farm Agent.
We walk into a beautifully decorated warm light wooden rustic restaurant and bar. Really very nice and upscale.
Our party of four was seated across from the Kitchen, but it looked very nice and complementary to the rest of the wood rustic look in the restaurant. As compared to the regular stainless steel you would normally see the kitchen and servers picking up the food for delivery.
I was really impressed with the decor and a lot of thought had gone into making this place cozy.
Our server came over and he was outstanding, explaining the menu, Making recommendations and bring our drinks. The menu had a lot going on for Brunch and regular items. I ordered the French toast w/bacon and it also came with potato wedges and this is were the story goes a little down hill for me.
Everything looked great the Bloody Mary's, Champaign, my Rum and Coke. The presentation of the plates of food looked equally as nice as the interior of the restaurant. But, the French Toast I just knew it was going g to be a hit FAILED ME!! It was OK, ot was missing that French toast cinnamon taste. The syrup was good but nothing to write hone about.
The portion was Meh for a French Toast. I had to cut it up in smaller pieces to make it last while we were all eating. The WORST was the BACON!!! DUDE!! It was a little embarrassing that bacon was a IHOP/Denny's type of bacon. Mostly fatty, skinny and no substance. This restaurant deserves real thick butcher style bacon. Not this flimsy soggy bacon that was just disrespectful to the plate of food.
Next big disappointment is the potatoes wedges/fries. Simply sad and they only gave me maybe 12 very small finger size fries I guess you can call them. They barely had any taste. I did T want my friends or wife to see the disappointment on my face so I ate pretty fast.
I felt I wanted to make up for it by going to Thumbs Up for thier French Toast. I realize and understand maybe French Toast isn't thier thing. But, this restaurant stands on upscale quality food. And something such a French Toast w/sickly bacon and weak potatoes fingers just wasn't cutting it. My wife felt the same thing with the corned beef. It was just ok. And she had to ask for salt & pepper to season the food SMH.
So for all of the fanfare of great customer service and great decor I side and outside the restaurant. The taste, quality and portion of the food was just MEH!!! For us. Maybe we will wait another seven years to try again lol.
I was very disappointed with this restaurant serving below average bacon, potatoes low quality food. The French Toast being a little square with no taste. SMDH
Maybe the other dishes are better and match the theme of The Mill. Was Not...
Read moreWe attended a birthday celebration at this location. From the beginning of the time we were there the service was a pretty prompt with a drink orders being taken. Appetizers were ordered. About 20 minutes later we instructed the waiter and waitress that we would like to go ahead and place our entree orders.
After the entire party of 16 placed their entree orders, we realize we were waiting a pretty good amount of time before any food came out. We ordered approximately at 7:00 p.m., our entrees did not start coming out until 7:57 p.m. that is a bit too long to wait for food. We get that it is a large party, and there were only two servers to our section. However, waiting for everyone's meals to come out at the same time put a large gap in time that we received our food. We watched tables around us receive their food after arriving after our party. That was a bit discouraging.
I had the black blue black mac and cheese, and it was not tasty at all it was very much flavorless and just tasted like butter noodles. And not even a good version of that. I had their mashed potatoes that were decent I could tell they were not instant pretty much homemade as possible. I also had a Caesar salad that was delicious. Can't really go wrong with a all natural Caesar salad. A couple of gas had their seafood pasta that was delicious. Very flavorful. And you get a lot of it very filling.
One of the drinks pictured in the photos is a tequila sunrise, That was very tasty. The other drinks at the table were t, ginger ale and sodas. Once the food all came out I did not hear many complaints about Flavor other than the mac and cheese.
We also concluded our meal around 8:00-25 p.m. and requested to pay per check, and the server said everyone needs to be on one check, which was not disclosed to us in the beginning. Therefore we had to speak with a manager in reference to putting our order separately.
While waiting on our checks to be delivered, we sang Happy birthday. Realize it had been about 20 minutes since we had the servers bring out the birthday cake and we were still waiting for our checks. The new paragraph need list to say the Ambiance was very pleasant all in all the service was just okay the servers were kind and communicated well that was just too much laps and time between ordering and receiving your food. Also if patrons need to pay a particular way with large parties, it should be disclosed at the beginning of ordering. Disclose this with whomever is responsible for the reservation.
All in all, I would return to this location. However I probably would not return with a large party.
Outside I'm being too very cozy nice and neat patio covered area very welcoming for an outside meal with...
