The Black - on Newport Street in Ocean Beach - is one of San Diego's only original "head shops" and is a cultural icon. It was open back in the day when marijuana use was considered illegal ; one could actually go to jail, or even prison for possession...Nowadays things have dramatically changed and cannabis is legal for medicinal use in a number of U.S. states however, in most cases one still needs a state mandated license. The only two illegal narcotics still ravenging our nation, as well as many countries, are crystal methadrine and heroin. Enough said about that... The Black still stands today : It is both a remembrance and a tribute to the 60's generation ; a time when the youth of America rebelled against the "organized establishment"; the antiquated conceptions of an antidiluvian, extremely conservative right wing Christian majority. It opened during the era of "the flower children," also referred to as "hippies" and has a great selection of everything reminiscent of the 60's generation to things used nowadays; some "rad" rock posters and rare record albums. We changed the world ushering in "women's liberation, civil rights, animal rights, conservation of resources ( Ecology), stone wall/LGBTQ rights, cannabis legalization, and myriad other historical events." The Black still stands today as a symbol of one of the greatest generations in American history, which is a subject that I can never say enough about. You can find tye-dy t-shirts and other 60's style goodies; awesome "rock n' roll" posters, scented candles, incense, turquoise and silver jewelry, smoking accessories and a plethora of unique household decorations, personal items and gifts of all imaginable types. The Black is surrounded by all different types of great businesses that one can only find in O.B.; some of the city's best surfshops, eateries and other places that are only unique to O.B., as well as a beautiful beach, with a mile long pier that draws local San Diegans and tourists from all over the world to walk out and admire it's beauty. The fishing is often good - seasonal - and you don't need a fishing license to fish from a pier in California, but I would check just to make sure, as it's been decade since I've gone fishing. I'm sorry however, due to a malfunction within my phone's system, I am not able to...
Read moreWhat a unique and cool store! The variety of everything from the usual to the unusual is in there. I started to list some items... but there are just too many.... so I'll just tell you what I've bought from there... several fedoras, guitar strings, t-shirts, hacky sacks, a frisbee, a few glass peices for smoking, incense, a few hilarious greeting cards, a cool little wooden decorative surfboard with a San Diego beach scene on it, a can of WD-40 that works and the bottom unscrews to hide your goodies... I've bought more but hopefully you get the idea of the coolness and variety. The staff is perfectly matched...unique and cool! Just today Rose, Danny and Shawn really helped me out with an exchange of a fedora that didn't quite fit the way I liked. And they were very friendly and eager to help. I hope I spelled their names right. It's been a pleasure! If you're in OB, it's a store to...
Read moreI came in here today on vacation there was a white broad behind the counter and pestimistic Mortricia dressed in black running the floor. As soon as my husband son and I turn the corner still inside of the store this close minded crack baby had the nerve and need to say this is America go back to Tijuana. Autistic broad we're not even from Tijuana. Learn some geography and open up your close minded drug addicted brain and get some real knowledge flowing inside that micro hippocampus. You're as dumb as you look. Everything inside this store is extremely ugly anyways. How about YOU have a nice...
