This place was ok. I probably wouldn’t go back. At the time, they only had 3 of their own beers on tap - the rest are guest beers. Had their dunkel, which for a dunkel in the US was better than I expected and it has won some US awards (I am used to frequent travel to Germany, which is heff and dunkel motherland). My husband had their pale ale which was fine, but switched to a guest beer after that. They were brewing while we were there, which we love the smell of brewing beer. For the food: The guacamole was super simple on the flavor profile and needed salt. Plan on putting a ton of guac on each chip you eat as the amount of chips was just 10 chips shy of the right amount. It is a small portion, so max 3 people on it if you are sharing. Had the larger poke bowl salad-it was overly sweet and not balanced in flavor. Needed an acid or something different. The mango and dressing just overwhelmed the flavor profile with sweet. Couldn’t really pick out the flavor of the ahi at all. My husband had the chicken sandwich, which wasn’t bad. Chicken was a touch dry. The fries that came with it were tasty and on the thinner side, but they needed to be fried a touch longer as they were soft. I think the chef is trying to go for simple, fresh, modern flavors, but it’s a brewery and in OB. It just didn’t seem to fit, but that’s just my opinion. My husband felt the same. The views on top are nice if you can find a spot in the shade on sunny days. Middle floor has some seats that overlook the street, and has a shuffle board table, fuse ball table, and big jenga set for fun beer games. The bottom floor has dog friendly spots to hang out at and people watch. I imagine this place is good for a hip, beer place to hang out near the beach, especially on summer nights with a bunch of friends. Otherwise, I was kinda underwhelmed. Service was...
Read moreThe only wish I have is that they were open when I lived in Ocean Beach. It's a three level brewery and each level offers a different experience.
First level will give you that typical brewery feeling. Bar seating, patio seating with the taps as the back drop and friendly bartender. Order at the bar.
The second level, the one with the bathrooms, offers shuffle board and a foosball table for the competitive spirits. I enjoy hanging out on this level, but it can get a lot with all of the traffic to the bathroom.
The third level and why everyone should come here is the rooftop seating level. They have amazing views of the ocean and palm trees. The only thing obstructing your view of the sunset is a palm tree and that is my type of place. It does get incredibly crowded on this level, but if you can find a spot or deal with the crowds, it's a great spot to be. There is a bar on this level too but the bartender is typically a waitress, so you will have to wait a bit either service you choose.
The food is fantastic. Better than typical bar food. I enjoyed their wings and french fries. Beer selection is great. They have their own brews, in addition to guest breweries too, which allows them to have a variety of flavors available.
The stairs are the most commonly used option to get to the top, but there is an elevator available.
Overall, friendly staff, great selection. Just a few blocks from the beach and right on Newport Ave., this is a must see when visiting Ocean Beach. It does get chilly (even in the summer), so I highly recommend...
Read moreI decided to try the Wednesday special: order wings and get a house beer for just a dollar, which sounded perfect since I had been craving wings. However, when it came time to pick a beer, I was disappointed to find that all three house options were varieties of IPA—a type of beer I don’t enjoy. Hoping for an alternative, I asked the bartender if they had any non-IPA options. To my surprise, she responded rudely, insisting that none of the house beers were IPAs. She was clearly mistaken, as the first beer listed was a "Pale Ale," and perhaps she didn’t realize that IPA stands for India Pale Ale.
Left with limited choices, I opted for the lightest beer on the menu. Though it was high-quality, it simply didn’t suit my taste. When the wings arrived, they were good but not particularly memorable. I had hoped for a bit more flavor or uniqueness, but they were average at best.
The one highlight of the experience was the atmosphere of the place. It had a lively, welcoming vibe that made it a nice spot to relax despite the other disappointments. Overall, while the atmosphere was great, the service and the food left much to be desired. It wasn’t a terrible experience, but it didn’t stand out either—just an...
