Our Tour Guide Andy took us on a educational tour of stark humor, matter of fact history, and hands on restoration experience. He seemed to live and breath the architecture of Old San Juan, and was literally holding the city on his back with the work he has done underneath it.

I stared in wonder, my breath was caught in my throat, I laughed with strangers that became friends.

Most of all I learned, the importance of the underground network of tunnels and cisterns, why all north south facing alleys finish as dead ends, the patterns of doorways and how to recognize the colonial area of influence in a building from the balcony style.

I highly recommend doing this tour at the beginning of your trip, as we were able to understand the city better as we moved around it for the rest of our trip. You’ll get access to rooftops and courtyard of a few residential building s you wouldn’t otherwise.
