It's a small museum, relatively, with a limited collection. You can really sense this from the limited exhibits with a very narrow range of focus, especially if you've been to some of the major museums in cities like London or San Francisco. But they make good use of this limitation, letting the visitors see the exhibits without overloading them with background information.
The exhibits are also displayed in collections and ways I don't think I've seen in other museum exhibits. Personally, I really loved the room with Buddhist statues that played recordings of meditative chants. Without intending to, I spent almost an hour in there listening to all the chants and I was so relaxed.
It was dark by the time I left, so I didn't have a chance to check out the rest of the park the museum is located in, but it's definitely worth a visit out from downtown if you're at all interested in Asian artifacts and art.
You can save a few bucks if you buy your ticket online at least the day before. The museum ticket prices in Seattle are pricey, so something to...
Read moreIt was $18 per adult on a Saturday. And the lockers downstairs for your bags were free! I went in at 12 and didn't come out until 3! They had a lot of beauuuuutiful pieces from all over Asia which I didn't expect to be honest. I won't spoil the anything and describe any of the pieces but lets just say I got lost in the minute details of everything. Absolutely incredible to see the artistic feats of the artists of each culture. Soooo much detail to appreciate! And the fact that we're able to see how beautiful they still are today after hundreds of years is amazing. I will mention that there were some wood statues where the paint had already faded and flaked off but you can spot some of the original (faded) paint and it was really fun to imagine how it would have looked like originally based off those small clues. I had lots of fun going through this museum and would recommend everyone to go see it and pick up a scan or souvenir from the shop. And all the staff were...
Read moreMuseum with a small collection of average art. Disappointed with some of the descriptions that look for example: ____period 1300-1900.Its almost as if they don't know where they got the item from besides "provenance" or just want to make it seem the item is a lot older than it is. Or just unsure in general of the timeline. Its like the equivalent of me saying a 1999 TV is from the 1900s instead of the 1990s... Also, after being closed for over a year it seems the only thing they really changed besides some exhibits was the bathroom...definitely money well spent to cater to a certain minority demographic but hey, thats Seattle for ya
Some of the snuff bottles look suspect in the case with guess what? the Apple watches. Would have been nice to show the bases with a clear stand such as how the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco does
Curation seems to go mainly based on who the donator was then going by period
Some exhibits...
